Alfred State College will pay tribute to veterans and current members of the United States armed forces on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, (Veterans’ Day), with the release of a special edition of Ergo, the student literary magazine, comprised of pieces written by current and former students who served or are serving in the armed forces and those who love them. The magazine will be available Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. in the Allegany Room of the Central Dining Hall on the Alfred campus. The event, sponsored by the College’s Department of English and Humanities, is open to the public free of charge.

Among the activities planned for the evening:

  • Bill Laubert, associate professor, English and Humanities Department, will open the activities by singing the Star-Spangled Banner;
  • ASC Automotive Trades Department, will do his tribute to Vietnam, "12 Roses;"
  • Joe Flynn, SUNY Distinguished Service Professor emeritus, ASC English and Humanities, will read his poetry;
  • ASC President Dr. John Anderson will perform a song in tribute to soldiers;
  • Darryl Huels, counselor, ASC Counseling Services, will play piano and provide some patriotic tribute;
  • First Sergeant Eric Gilman will read from his works on Iraq;
  • ASC Business Department, will talk about the Veterans’ Task Force and read a poem or two;
  • Dr. John O. Hunter, ASC president emeritus, is expected to read;
  • several other veteran students have committed to reading;
  • a soldier's daughter will do her poem to surprise her father; and
  • ASC Physical and Health Sciences Department, is also scheduled to recite.

It is an open mike night, and it is hoped that several people will be moved to read their own works or works by others. The desserts will be provided by the Culinary Arts students from Wellsville; the art work will be provided by our students as well.

The Veterans’ Ergo is Alfred State College's tribute to the men and women who serve this country and to their families. It begins with a dedication to Zach Smith and the many other soldiers who gave their lives; his mother and several friends wrote pieces about him. The magazine contains photos from Allegany County's Revolutionary War veteran, to the gravestone of Jason Dunham, to the Elmira Veterans' Cemetery, to pictures of the Moving Wall, to photos of two World War II veterans, who are the fathers of Alfred faculty. The centerfold, at the request of several of our current veterans, is entitled "Beyond the Service" and shows veterans having fun. This issue of Ergo contains 45 years of contributions covering the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of the pieces in the magazine have been previously published in Ergo.

Copies of Ergo may be obtained by contacting the College’s English and Humanities Department at (607) 587-4180.
