Lady Pioneers Suffer First Loss

The Alfred State women's basketball team lost a back and forth contest 75-71 to Westchester CC in the Alfred State Tournament.  The game featured seven ties and ten lead changes.

Alfred led 68-66 with just under a minute left in the contest.  Westchester's Hayley Awerdick drew a foul and hit the first foul shot.  Her second shot rattled out and Neilia McKenzie grabbed the rebound and scored her lone basket of the game to give WCC the lead for good.

Haley Witchella (Oxford Academy) led the Pioneers with 20 points and 12 rebounds but was limited to just 21 minutes due to foul troubles.  Karley Fanning (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) finished with 16 while Helena Covington (Elmira Free) added 10 points and 14 rebounds off the bench.

Emonni Cooper led Westchester with 20 points and 15 boards while Awerdick came off the bench with 17.  Beatrice Wilson recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 boards.

The Lady Pioneers trailed 31-26 at halftime.

Alfred has very limited time to regroup as they battle Fulton Montgomery CC at 8 p.m. on Saturday night.
