Lady Pioneers win Season Opener

The Alfred State women's basketball team opened up the 2012-13 season with a 57-43 victory over Broome CC.

Karley Fanning (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) led the way with 13 points while Haley Witchella (Oxford) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 boards.  Destiny Brito (Manhattan/Park West) finished with nine points, nine boards, and five assists, Eleasha Wiggins (Brooklyn/Bedford Academy) had eight points off the bench, and Briana Meehan (Whitesville) chipped in six.

The Lady Pioneers led 25-17 at half.  They expanded their lead to 20 in the 2nd half before Broome hit four 3-pointers in the final five minutes of the game.  Alfred held a 51 to 44 rebound advantage.

Kelcie Marshall led the Lady Hornets with 11 points while Jennifer Celiberti chipped in nine.  Broome was slowed down by 23.8% shooting and 30 turnovers.

The blue & gold hit the road this weekend to participate in the SUNY Delhi Tournament.  They take on Sullivan County CC in their first round match-up at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
