Pioneers Down Delhi in Home Opener

The Alfred State men's soccer team downed SUNY Delhi 3-1 in their 2012 home opener.  The game was part of the East-West Showdown.

Alfred's Shane Joyce (Irondequoit) scored the lone goal of the 1st half when he bent a free kick in the top corner of the net.

Jacob Hoag tied it up just over 20 minutes into the 2nd half but Nick Peraino (Geneseo) got the lead back for Alfred ten minutes later when he scored after picking the ball up after a Bronco turnover.  Mitchell Porter (Alfred Almond) added an insurance goal in the final minutes when he scored on a penalty kick.

Nick Smith (Arkport) made one save to record the victory for Alfred while Zach Erbe made five saves.

The Pioneers held a 11 to 6 shot advantage on the day.

Alfred takes on Mohawk Valley CC in day two of the East-West Showdown on Sunday at 2 p.m.  Mohawk Valley defeated Jamestown CC 4-0 in the opener on Saturday.  Jamestown and Delhi play at Noon on Sunday.
