The Opportunity of a Lifetime at Bonneville Salt Flats

“See you at four!” Such words have been typical for automotive trades students to hear from Assistant Professor Jim Fleischman. In order to prepare one of the college’s Honda Insights for a land speed record attempt during Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats in August, students have been up and working at 4 a.m.

Utah’s Salt Flats hosts this annual, historical event, which began in 1949. The Flats are comprised of a 30,000-acre expanse of hard, white salt crust on the western edge of the Great Salt Lake basin in Utah.

Alfred State students are poised to make their own run with one of the college’s alternative fuel vehicles – a green initiative about to meet the need for speed. A prime demonstration of project-based learning, the students have rebuilt or modified much of the car as they’ve learned to make it race ready. They’re raring to go, but are still in need of parts and supplies.

Help us provide these students with the opportunity of a lifetime that culminates their hard work and skills by donating online (select ‘Bonneville Salt Flats’ in the drop-down menu) or via check (payable to ASC Development Fund, indicated for Bonneville). Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Contact us for more information at (607) 587-3930 or ia@alfredstate.edu.
