Dining Services is on a Winning Streak
Alfred State’s dining services is on a winning streak. After winning a gold award in 2011 from the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) for a Residential Dining special event, in April 2012 they grabbed a regional finalist position in the New York State Beef Council’s Best New York Burger contest. Now in May 2012 they are bringing home some more hardware in the form of another gold award from NACUFS for a catered special event at the Lake Lodge. The Dining Services team is part of Auxiliary Campus Enterprises and Services Inc. (ACES), the not-for-profit corporation that provides dining services on campus.
“I couldn’t be more pleased and proud of our team,” said Karen Canne, Director of Dining Services. “We are always winners when we complete an event, but to win an award for it is just icing on the cake. We are so thrilled to be recognized by NACUFS for the second year in a row.”
The event at the Lake Lodge happened to be the wedding of the daughter of former Alfred State alums Thomas and Mary Lou Massara. Tom Massara retired in December 2010 as the Executive Director of ACES. Mary Lou Massara is currently employed on campus in Health Services.
Nicole Massara married Patrick Cregan in September 2011. The wedding event was documented by the ACES team from first planning stages straight through to clean-up the night of the wedding. The photographs, catering documentation, and planning process of the event were combined to create a winning photo book entry.
The wedding highlighted the family’s connection to Alfred State, the family’s Italian heritage, and their Western New York roots. Guests dined on shrimp kababs, chicken scallopini, roasted grape tomato bruschetta, and an array of appetizers. Local wines, flowers from Way to Grow in Alfred Station, and cakes from Cynthia’s Cookies in Hornell were used at the reception.
This year’s win marks the eighth time that ACES has won an award from NACUFS and the second consecutive year of bringing home the gold.
The Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards are presented annually to the best college dining services organizations in the country. Alfred State took the gold award in the small school category for a catered event. All gold winners are eligible for the grand prize which will be announced at the 2012 Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards luncheon at the national conference in July in Boston, MA.
