Pioneers and Red Barons Split Wild Doubleheader
Alfred State and Corning CC battled in a Region III Division III doubleheader that featured more twists and turns than a mystery novel. The Pioneers (5-23, 4-12) walked off with a 9-8 victory in game one while the Red Barons (7-15, 4-10) took game two 7-6 behind a solo homer in the top of the 9th.
The opener was a wild back and forth affair that featured seven lead changes and runs being scored in 10 of the 14 half innings, the Pioneers struck last in their final at bat to break an 8-8 tie. With two outs, Yohei Nishimura (Tottori, Japan) dropped a single into left field that scored Garrett Hoag (Dansville).
Hoag was 2 for 3 with a RBI and also picked up the win with 1.1 innings of one-hit work out of the bullpen. Eric Hicks (Livonia) was 2 for 3 and Greg Koller (Chesterland, OH) was 1 for 2 with 2 RBI.
Corning seemed to be in control of the nightcap heading into the bottom of the 6th inning with a 4-0 lead. The Pioneers erased that lead in the 6th only to see the Red Barons score two in the 7th. In the bottom of the 7th, Alfred took advantage of a couple costly errors to send the game into extra innings. Both teams had opportunities in the 8th but did not score. In the 9th, Montana Yastremski hit a solo shot to give the Barons a 7-6 advantage. The blue & gold put runners on 1st and 2nd in the bottom of the inning but could not score the tying run.
Brett Rapan (Bolivar Richburg) was 2 for 4 with a RBI while Nishimura was 2 for 5.
The doubleheader featured a combined 30 runs, 50 hits, 21 walks, and 14 errors.
The Pioneers and Red Barons continue their four-game set on Thursday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Corning.
