Rapan Delivers Game Winning Hit
Brett Rapan (Bolivar Richburg) singled home Kiele Wilson (Bath Haverling) in the 7th inning to break a 4-4 tie en route to a Alfred State 6-4 victory over Broome CC on Friday afternoon. The Pioneers clinched the series with the victory and finish the year 3-1 vs. the Hornets.
In the game-deciding 7th inning, Wilson singled to lead off. He went to second on a perfectly executed slash single by Eric Mehaffy (Lisbon). After a fly out, Rapan broke the tie with a RBI single to left. Mehaffy came around to score later in the inning on a wild pitch to add an insurance run.
After breaking the tie, Ruben Mizrahi (Weston, FL) shut the door and retired the final six Hornets in order. Mizrahi picked up the win in the contest with three solid innings of perfect relief. He finished with three strikeouts. His relief effort followed a solid start by Garrett Hoag (Dansville) who allowed six hits and two earned runs in the first six innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out 12.
Hoag got the Pioneers on the board in the 2nd inning when he launched a no-doubt-about-it homer to left field. The Pioneers kept the pressure on in the 2nd and plated two more runs when Mehaffy collected a two-run double.
The Hornets took the lead in the 4th when they strung together three hits and took advantage of two Pioneer errors to score four runs.
Alfred State tied it up in the bottom of the 5th, on a RBI single by Mitch Smith (Greece Arcadia) that scored Mehaffy.
Mehaffy led the Pioneers 11-hit attack with a 4 for 4, 2 RBI day. Hoag was 2 for 3 as well.
The blue & gold (4-20, 3-11 Region III Division III) head to Monroe CC this weekend to participate in the David Chamberlain MCC Tournament. They take on the host Tribunes at 10 a.m. on Saturday and then battle the Ontario Terriers at 1 p.m.
