Lady Pioneers Split Season Opening DH

The Alfred State softball team started their 2012 season with a split on their opening day at Snowbird Softball in Myrtle Beach, SC.  The Lady Pioneers fell 10-0 to Raritan (NJ) Valley CC but rebounded for a 13-1 victory over Massasoit (MA) CC.

In the opener, Alfred trailed 2-0 in the 4th before Raritan Valley connected on two homers in an 8-run inning to put the game out of reach.  Reagan Ball (Hammondsport) collected a double and Athena Scavo (Hornell) had a single to account for the Lady Pioneers two hits.

Versus Massasoit, the Lady Pioneers scored in each of the five innings to cruise to the victory.  Alfred scored four in the 1st, two in the 2nd, three in the 3rd, 3 in the 4th, and one in the 5th.  Taylor McCarthy (Watkins Glen) was 2 for 2, Renee Stanford (Canisteo Greenwood) was 2 for 3, and Tara Scholla (Genesee Valley) was 2 for 5 with a RBI.  Kristen Potter (Northern Potter, PA) was 1 for 1 with 3 RBI while Scavo and Elisha Conklin (Letchworth) each drove home two.

Potter struck out five and allowed just one earned run in four innings of work to earn the victory on the mound.  McCarthy struck out two in the final frame to close out the victory.

The Lady Pioneers return to action tomorrow with another twinbill.  They take on Finger Lakes CC at 9:30 a.m. and Delaware Tech CC at 11:30 a.m.
