Baseball Sweeps Past Corning

Playing for the first time in three weeks, the Alfred State College baseball team opened up Region III Division III play by sweeping Corning CC, 7-4 and 13-0, at Tuller Field.  The Pioneers, winners of six in a row, are now 6-3.

Andrew Alexander (LeRoy), Anthony Espe (Union Endicott) and JP Frey (Erie, PA/McDowell) all were 2 for 3 to pace the offense.  Alexander also drove in two.  Tyler Mann (Holland Patent) earned the win with a complete game six hitter.  He allowed three earned runs while striking out five and walking two.

Kevan Smith (Cicero North Syracuse) was 3 for 4 with 5 RBI in the nightcap as the Pioneers cruised to victory.  Smith hit a key three-run homer.  Frey was 3 for 3 with a RBI while Mann, Travis Fenstermaker (LeRoy), and Daniel Sill (Lansing) were each 2 for 3.  Garrett Hoag (Dansville) allowed four hits in five innings to earn the shutout win.  He also struck out seven and walked two.

The Pioneers begin a four-game set with Jamestown CC on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
