Pioneers Open up Season with Tough Losses

The Alfred State College baseball team opened up their 2011 spring season with two tough losses at Cocoa Expo.  The Pioneers fell 2-1 to Dean (MA) College and then lost an eight-inning contest 6-3 to Miami (OH) Middletown.

Versus Dean, Ruben Mizrahi (Weston, FL/David Pasnack) allowed just two hits in six innings of work but was the tough luck loser.  He allowed one earned run while striking out three and walking six.  Dean scored single runs in the first two innings and held off a Pioneer 5th inning rally.  In the 5th, Kevan Smith (Cicero North Syracuse) collected a RBI double but the Pioneers stranded runners on 2nd and 3rd.

Miami-Middletown scored three runs in the top of the 8th inning en route to the victory.  Smith smacked a two-run homer to pace the offense while Daniel Sill (Lansing) and Andrew Alexander (LeRoy) each finished 2 for 3.  Anthony Espe (Union Endiott) was 2 for 4 on the day.  John Whitehead (Amherst) tossed five solid innings allowing one earned run and seven hits but did not factor in the decision.

ASC returns to action on Sunday when they battle ASA Institute at 1 p.m. in Cocoa, FL.
