Campus Campaign for Toys for Tots Raises $1,800+ for Local Children
Santa’s helpers at Alfred State College’s School of Applied Technology in Wellsville have been very busy. A campus campaign for Toys for Tots raised $1,800+ to make local children’s lives a little merrier this season. Thanks to the brainchild of culinary arts: baking, production and management senior Maggie Langan, Wellsville, president of the Top Hat Club (culinary honor society), a plush pink porcine pet wearing a lovely sparkling tiara was circulated around the campus with a tee shirt emblazoned with “Let’s raise some bacon for Toys for Tots.” Students, faculty, and staff then had to ransom the pig in reverse: for a minimum donation of $10, the pig could be evicted from one area to be passed on to another class, office, or curriculum. The generous results were staggering, according to Langan. “To tell the truth, I was hoping for $500,” she says. “The generosity of my fellow students, the faculty, and staff on campus is simply overwhelming.” But the generosity didn’t stop there. One of the College’s culinary graduates (Jamie Hetzelt Wells, Buffalo) offered her father Erwin’s 40% discount at Fisher-Price in East Aurora…which parlayed that original $1,800 into over $3,000 worth of toys! The presentation was made to Reggie Dallaire, the Southern Tier representative for the Marine Corps Reserve “Toys for Tots” before students left for the semester break.
