The Alfred State College wrestling team fell 34-12 to Niagara CCC in a WNYAC dual match on Friday evening. The Pioneers are now 1-2-1 (1-1-1 WNYAC) on the season heading into the holiday break.
The Pioneers won three of the nine matches contested. Eric Shedden (Canton, PA) earned a pin of Tim Coughlin at 2:46 of the match at 141 lbs., Dan Steiger (Miller Place) downed Don Schildhuer 6-1 at 174 lbs., and Eric Giles (Vestal) earned a 6-3 victory at 197 lbs.
Niagara earned pins at 141, 184, and Heavyweight and a forfeit win at 125 to accumulate 24 of their team points. NCCC's Troy Ireland won the most exciting match of the night 10-8 over Shawn Hanrahan (Unatego) at 157 lbs.
Alfred State was supposed to host the annual ASC Tournament on Saturday but low numbers of participants forced the cancellation of the event. ASC will not return to action until January 22 when they compete at the NYS Collegiate Championships held at Cornell University in Ithaca.
