Pioneers Hold off Orange Rally

Submitted by WelkerPM on Sat, 11/14/2009 - 4:57pm

The Alfred State College men's basketball team held off a second half rally by SUNY Orange and escaped with a 61-57 victory.  The Pioneers snap a three game slide and improve to 3-4 on the year.

ASC led 50-37 with 13:27 remaining but the Colts defense stepped up and held the Pioneers to just seven points in the next 11 minutes to knot the game up at 57-57.  With just under a minute left Neil Wilson (Ft. Worth, TX) hit a jumper to put the blue & gold back in the lead.  After two missed scoring opportunities for Orange, Wilson salted the game away with two foul shots.

Wilson led the way with 17 points while Younatan Gobezai (Bethesda, MD) finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.  Rasean Parris (Benjamin Banecker) chipped in 12 points and Brendan Letteer (Odessa Montour) had a solid day with six points and 10 rebounds.

Amemou Jean-Baptiste led the Colts with 18 points and seven boards while Malik Jenkins finished with 16.

The Pioneers shot 40.4% from the field, 25% from three point range, and 58.8% from the foul line while the Colts shot 36% from the field, 31.6% from three, and 62.5% from the line.

Alfred State has a few days off before heading to Cuyahoga (OH) CC for a 6:30 p.m. rematch with the Challengers.
