New Professional Staff Members at ASC

Several new professional staff members have joined the Alfred State College community.

Among the new hires are Dr. Brian Baker, Alfred; Jessica Dunster, Birdsall; Jason Gildner, Wellsville; Emily Hall-LochmannVanBennekom, Dansville; Kati Libby, Orono, ME; Gregory Nelson, East Syracuse; Samantha Roosa, Arkport; Kristin Sauerbier, Wayland; Dr. Jayne Swanson, Belfast; Christian Vernam, Dansville; Thomas Windus, Scio; and Jamie Winters, Alfred.

Dr. Brian BakerBaker joins the ASC community as executive director of the Institute for Sustainability, where he has oversight of the activities and projects of the three components of the Institute:  the Center for Organic and Sustainable Agriculture, the Center for Renewable Energy, and the Green Team

He comes to Alfred State from the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI), a non-profit research and education organization based in Eugene, OR, that he founded in 1997 to provide technical support for organic farmers.  After OMRI received official recognition from the US Department of Agriculture and became established as an internationally respected authority in the field, Baker was ready for a fresh challenge which he found at Alfred State, saying, “Alfred State College has established an ambitious program at an institution with a global reputation of excellence for its teaching.”

Baker, who hails from Almond and is a graduate of Alfred-Almond Central School, went on to earn a bachelor of arts degree in economics and political science from SUNY New Paltz.  He continued his education as a Lehman fellow at Cornell University where he earned both master and doctoral degrees in agricultural economics.  He subsequently went on to do post doctoral work at the University of California, Berkeley. 

For the past 20 years, he  has worked in the private sector to help farmers adopt healthier and more environmentally sound practices, first with California Certified Organic Farmers, an organic farmers’ trade association based in Santa Cruz, and then with OMRI.

Jessica DunsterDunster has been hired as the assistant athletic trainer, where she provides orthopedic injury assessments for student athletes; develops and applies treatment plans that incorporate therapeutic exercise and modalities; assists head athletic trainer with administrative requirements such as documentation of patient files, coaches’ reports, budgets, and inventory; assists in the prevention of athletic injuries and illnesses; evaluates athletic injuries; treats athletic injuries; provides counseling and education to student athletes; assists with coordination and scheduling of medical coverage for home and away competitions; assists in the supervision, education and recruitment of student athletic trainers; cares for athletic injuries using physical therapy equipment, techniques, and medication; evaluates athletes' readiness to play; and provides participation clearances when necessary and warranted; applies protective or injury preventive devices such as tape, bandages, or braces to body parts such as ankles, fingers, or wrists; assesses and reports the progress of recovering athletes to coaches and physicians; collaborates with physicians to develop and implement comprehensive rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries; advises athletes on the proper use of equipment; plans and implements comprehensive athletic injury and illness prevention programs; and develops training programs and routines designed to improve athletic performance.

Prior to joining the ASC staff, Dunster worked at SUNY Institute of Technology; performed per diem work for Slocum Dickson Sports Medicine and for Athletic Training Solutions.

Dunster holds a bachelor of science degree from Alfred University and a master of physical education degree from the University of Central Missouri.


The Auburn High School graduate is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association; she is a certified kinesis taping practitioner.

Dunster is the daughter of William and Paula Dunster of Auburn.

Gildner, a 2003 graduate of Alfred State College, serves as the college photographer and multi-media technician.  Recently, he added men’s soccer coach to his range of responsibilities.

The Portville Central School graduate is the son of Sally Gildner, Portville, and Dennis Gildner, Belfast.

Emily Hall-LochmannVanBennekomHe and his wife, the former Melody Fleming, are the parents of Halle, Ethan, and Benjamin, all at home.

Hall-LochmannVanBennekom joins the ASC professional staff as a residence director in the Division of Campus Life, where she supervises and enforces college regulations and policies; serves as a liaison between students and faculty and administration; selects, trains, and supervises student staff; and is responsible for individual and group counseling within the residence hall.     

Prior to joining the ASC staff, Hall-LochmannVanBennekom served as an elementary school counselor at Wayland-Cohocton and as a resident director at Alfred University.

Kati LibbyHall-LochmannVanBennekom holds an MS in education with school counseling, from Alfred University; a BS in human development from Binghamton University; and an AS in human services from Alfred State College (2004).

The Dansville Senior High School graduate is the daughter of Shann Hall and Christopher LochmannVanBennekom.

Libby also joins the Campus Life staff as a residence director. Prior to joining the ASC staff, Libby worked as an account coordinator for Passage Events, Seattle.  She holds an MBA from Bentley University and a BS in business administration from the University of Southern Maine.

The Orono, ME, High School graduate is the daughter of William and Diann Libby of Orono.

Gregory NelsonNelson has also been hired in this year’s group of residence directors.  He holds a bachelor of science degree in management from Binghamton University.  The Fayetteville-Manlius HS graduate is the son of Janet and Paul Nelson, East Syracuse.

Roosa serves as the training director for the college, where she coordinates professional development training for college personnel and others.  She holds a BA in business administration from SUNY Empire State College and an associate’s degree in human services from Alfred State College (1996).

Samantha RoosaThe Arkport Central School graduate is the daughter of David and Diane Roosa, Arkport; she is the mother of Cameron Ellington and Laici Ellington, both at home.

Sauerbier has been hired as an admissions counselor for the college. In this capacity, she provides information to students, parents, and school counselors, both on and off campus; participates in recruitment activities; reviews applications for admission; and travels to lower Hudson, Long Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island to carry out these duties.

Prior to joining the ASC community, Sauerbier worked as a paralegal in Boston, MA.

Kristin SauerbierShe holds a BA in history from Hartwick College.

The Wayland-Cohocton Central School graduate is the daughter of Jim and Ria Sauerbier, Wayland.

Swanson is serving the college as its director of assessment and professional development where she is responsible for overall management of the planning, development, and implementation of assessment and faculty development activities across the College in respect to the mission, goals, and objectives of Alfred State. She works with all levels of administration to assure that college-wide assessment and professional development activities address and improve overall college effectiveness relating to student outcomes assessment, teaching and learning efficiencies, accreditation, institutional effectiveness, and budgeting and planning processes. 

Dr. Jayne SwansonSwanson holds three degrees in sociology:  the doctorate from SUNY @ Buffalo, and master and bachelor degrees from Wichita State University.

The Wichita High School North graduate is the daughter of the late Clyde and Shirley Maugans.  She and her husband, William Swanson, EdD, are the parents of daughter Grace Ann Maugans Scherzer, at home.

Vernam serves as the assistant director of financial aid at ASC.  In this capacity, he is responsible for financial aid counseling and oversight of the work study program.

Christian VernamPrior to joining the campus community, Vernam served as a branch manager for Citizens Bank.  He holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration with a management concentration from SUNY Brockport and an AAS in business administration from Alfred State College. (1996).

The Dansville Central School graduate is the son of Mary Jo Vernam, Wayland, and the late Marc Vernam.

He and his wife, the former Stacey Williams, are the parents of Shyann Beecher and Ciara Jo Vernam, both at home.

Thomas WindusWindus has been hired as the director of facilities services for the college.  In this capacity, he is responsible for the overall supervision of the day-to-day operation of facilities and physical plant.

Prior to joining the ASC staff, Windus served as the director of public works for the city of Olean, and as the county engineer for Allegany County.

Windus holds a BS in civil engineering from SUNY @ Buffalo, and an AS in engineering science from Alfred State College (1991).  He is a professional licensed engineer in NYS.

The Scio Central School graduate is the son of John and MaryAnn Windus, Scio.  He and his wife, the former Amy Patrick, are the parents of Mason, Maegan, Mackenzie, Maddox, and Maxim.

Jamie WintersWinters joins the campus community as the coordinator of international student programs.  In this capacity, she is responsible for advising and assisting international students with all aspects of adjusting to life at Alfred State College, advising the International Club, processing international student applications, and coordinating international student orientation.

Prior to joining the ASC staff, Winters worked in a variety of positions, including as an intern for the Centre for International Exchange and Development at Keele University, Staffordshire, England; sales manager, Prestige Hospitality; sales associate, Clarion Hotel of Albany; group tour/convention sales coordinator, Albany County Convention Visitors Bureau; and program coordinator, Albany Visitors Center.

Winters holds a master’s degree in intercultural relations from Lesley University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Siena College. She is the daughter of Katherine Winters, Fort Edward.
