Orvis Award Recipient - Berg
Nearly 900 two- and four-year graduates, their families, professors, and friends were on hand Sunday, May 17, as Alfred State College honored its 98th graduating class. Dr. John M. Anderson, college president, presided over the ceremony. One of the highlights of the ceremony is the presentation of the Paul B. Orvis Award for Excellence, presented to the outstanding two-year graduates in each of the college's schools of study, as well as to a baccalaureate graduate. The award, which honors Paul B. Orvis, a former president of Alfred State and State University of New York dean for two-year colleges, is a glass bowl. Recipients must meet four criteria: service, leadership, character, and scholarship. Faculty, staff, and fellow students appraise the first three. Scholarship is determined by an analysis of the student's academic standing in comparison to other students in the academic area. Dr. Ronald R. Rosati, provost and vice president for academic affairs, presented the Award. Sara Berg, Candor, who received her bachelor of science degree in architectural technology at the ceremony, was selected for the award as the School of Management and Engineering Technology baccalaureate-level recipient. During her time at Alfred State College, Berg captured first place in the "Treasure from Alfred's Trash Heap" competition, creating a lamp from soda cans; earned honorable mention in the national TCA/PCA Storm Housing 2007 Design competition; was an Alice Bidlack Scholarship recipient; was on Dean's List; and earned an honorable mention in the International Architectural Design Contest for Susquehanna Gateway Project where she designed a public building and park to provide access and view of the river. Additionally, Berg participated in the ASC Sorrento, Italy, study abroad program; is a member of Tau Alpha Pi national engineering tech honor society; served as a staff member on Ergo, the campus literary magazine; and was a member of WINS (Women in Non-traditional Studies). She is the daughter of Robert and Cher Berg, Candor.
