Tracksters Open Outdoor Season

The Alfred State College outdoor track and field team opened up the outdoor portion of their season with strong performances at the Howard (MD) CC Invitational.  Five Pioneers qualified for the NJCAA Division III Nationals to be held at Alfred State in May with solid efforts.

David Gross (Brockport) won both the discus (40.06 m) and the hammer throw (40.26 m) to qualify for Nationals.  Lemanuel Hawkins (East Orange, NJ) won the 100 m dash (11.44) and was 2nd in the 200 m dash (23.31) while Ken Maddox (Frederick Douglass) was 2nd in the 100 (11.57) and 3rd in the 200 (23.44).  Broncho Rollins (Ithaca) qualified for nationals by winning the pole vault (14') and Rod Streater (Burlington, NJ) qualified for nationals by winning the high jump (1.87 m).  Wenley Louis (Irondequoit) was also an individual event winner in the long jump (6.58 m).

Other top performances include; Alex Curran (Williamson) finished tied for 3rd in the pole vault (13') and Matt Owlett (Alfred Almond) was 7th in both the 1500 (4:19.89) and the 800 (2:05.86).

On the women's side Lindsey Johnson (Dansville) was 2nd in both the shot put (9.83 m) and the discus (23.26 m).  Her shot distance qualified her for Nationals.  Bridget McMahon (Avoca) was 2nd in the 800 (2:39.88) to qualify for nationals and was 4th in the 1500 (5:26.59).

The Pioneers return to action next Friday when they host a quad meet with Alfred University, Erie CC, and Finger Lakes CC.  Events are scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
