Women's Basketball Earns 4th Seed

The Alfred State College women's basketball team has earned the #4 seed for the upcoming Region III Division II Tournament.  The Lady Pioneers finished the regular season with a 10-13 mark and a 5-5 record in Region III Division II play.

ASC will host #5 Erie CC in a first round contest on Thursday evening at the Orvis Activities Center at 6 p.m.  The winner of the contest moves on to the semifinals on Saturday vs. #1 Genesee CC (10-0 Region III Division II) at GCC at 1 p.m.

The Lady Pioneers and the Lady Kats split their regular season series with each team winning at home.

• 1/24: ASC downed ECC 89-75 behind Brittney Brooks' (Elmira Free) 33 point, 13 rebound performance.  Sherelle Brooks (Elmira Free) added 14 points and 10 assists.  Shaneya Ferguson led the Kats with 16 points off the bench.  Erie led by six at halftime, but the Pioneers outscored ECC 50 to 30 in the second half.
• 2/10: ECC defeated ASC 52-48 in a contest where both teams shot 25%.  The Kats trailed by one at half but held the Pioneers scoreless for over ten minutes in the second half.  Ferguson led the way again with 13 points off the bench for Erie while Sherelle Brooks led ASC with 13 points.

Brittney Brooks leads the Lady Pioneers with 19 points per game and 8.5 rebounds.  Gina Moss (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) is averaging 8.9 points per game and 5 rebounds while Sherelle Brooks is averaging 8.6 points and 5.1 assists.

In the other first round match-up, #3 Mercyhurst North East (5-5 Region III Division II) takes on #6 Niagara CCC (0-10 Region III Division II).  The winner of that contest takes on #2 Jamestown CC (6-4 Region III Division II) at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Genesee CC.

The Lady Pioneers are making their 16th straight appearance in the Regional tournament.
