The Alfred State College men's indoor track & field team opened up Region III Championships on a strong note at Colgate University's Class of '32 Invitational on Saturday.  The Pioneers accumulated 112 points to claim the top spot after the field events while the Lady Pioneers sit in 3rd after picking up 36 points.

Wenley Louis (West Irondequoit) won the long jump with a leap of 6.92 m and finished 2nd in the triple jump (13.72) in the competition that featured 17 different colleges.

David Gross (Brockport) won the shot put with a throw of 15.21 m and finished 4th in the weight throw with a toss of 15.24.  His throw in the weight throw qualifies him for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships.  Gross qualified for the shot put last weekend.

The men lead second place Erie CC by 68 points.  Mohawk Valley CC has 33 and SUNY Delhi 20.

Erie CC leads the women's competition with 62 points followed by Mohawk Valley CC's 48.  SUNY Delhi is in 4th with 12.

The Region III Championship continues February 13-14 with the heptathlon and pentathlon to be held at Cornell University.

The Pioneers will next be in action next weekend when they travel to Susquehanna University next Saturday.  Events are set to begin at 10 a.m.
