Submitted by WelkerPM on Sat, 01/24/2009 - 5:52pm

Wenley Louis (Irondequoit) and David Gross (Brockport) each set new school records as the Alfred State College indoor track and field team competed at the Mary Phillips Open at SUNY Fredonia.

Louis set a new school record and qualified for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships by winning the long jump.  His winning leap of 7.10 m breaks the previous record held by Alton West of 7.04 m.  Lewis also won the triple jump with a mark of 13.91 narrowly missing qualifying for nationals in the event.

Gross broke the school record in winning both the shot put and the weight throw.  In the shot put he earned a mark of 15.29 m breaking Tim Benson's record of 14.48 m while in the weight throw his mark of 14.83 m broke Benson's previous record mark of 14.81.

Alex Curran (Williamson) finished 2nd in the pole vault with a mark of 3.96 m while Lemanuel Hawkins (East Orange, NJ) was 3rd in the 200 (23.78).  Russ Weidler (Laurens) was 3rd in the triple jump (13.16 m) and 4th in the long jump (6.37 m), Schuyler Duross (Johnstown) was 4th in the pole vault (3.2 m), Brian Zintel (Letchworth) was 5th in the 800 (2:06.01), Paul Golish (Bolivar Richburg) was 5th in the shot put (11.87 m), and Ken Maddox (New York) was 6th in the 200 (24.08).

Emily Johns (Bath) recorded the top finish on the women's side with a 2nd place finish in the high jump (1.5 m).  Kaleigh Ligoci (Cicero North Syracuse) was 3rd in the 800 (2:52.40), Jessie Smith (Fredonia) was 4th in the 400 (1:06.57) and 7th in the 200 (28.73), Bridget McMahon (Avoca) was 6th in the 1500 (5:41.50), and Lindsey Johnson (Dansville) was 6th in the shot put (9.25 m).

The Pioneers return to action next weekend when they travel to Colgate University for the Class of '32 Invitational.  Action is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in Hamilton.
