Four Pioneers Place at ASC Open

Four members of the Alfred State College wrestling team earned top four finishes at the annual ASC Open on Saturday.  Darren Whittall (Starpoint) and Daniel Steiger (Miller Place) took home 3rd while Alex Krammell (Perry) and Dan Dwyer (Lafayette) finished 4th.

Whittall was 3-1 on the day at 141 lbs.  He defeated Russ Wojtusiak (Niagara CCC) 3-1 in the opening round before falling in the semifinals.  he bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Brock Baase-Fay (Jamestown CC) and a 5-0 victory over Wojtusiak to earn 3rd place honors.

Steiger was 1-1 on the day at 184 lbs.  He fell to eventual champion Nate Scheidel (Binghamton) in his opening match but bounced back for a 3-1 victory over Mike Powell (Mercyhurst NE) to earn 3rd place honors.

Kramell (165 lbs.) and Dwyer (197) both were 2-2 on the day to earn 4th place honors while Greg Carta (Glens Falls) was 2-2 in 157 lb. weight class.

Anthony Jerome of Binghamton University was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.  The tournament featured 62 wrestlers representing Alfred State, Niagara CCC, Jamestown CC, Mercyhurst North East, Ithaca College, Oswego, and Binghamton.

The Pioneers return to action in just over a month (1/16) when they travel to Oswego for the annual NYS Collegiate Championships.
