Lax Players Earn Awards
Four members of the Alfred State College lacrosse team have been recognized with postseason awards. The Pioneers returned to the Region III Tournament where they finished 6th with a 9-5 overall record and a 7-5 mark in Region III play.
Bill Jolly (Waterloo) was a 2nd team All-Region midfielder and All-WNYAC selection after leading the team 58 points. He scored 41 points and passed out 17 assists while picking up 70 ground balls. He scored more than three goals in nine games and finished with five goals on three different occasions. He had a season high nine points (5 goals and 4 assists) in a 17-11 victory at Genesee CC.
Josh Mateo (Waterloo) was a honorable mention All-Region and All-WNYAC selection after a solid all-around first season with the Pioneers. He finished with 36 goals and 16 assists while picking up a team high 120 groundballs. In the face-off circle he was 89 for 151. Mateo scored more than three goals in ten games on the season and had a season high nine points (3 goals and 6 assists) at Genesee CC.
Ryan Grogan (Churchville) was named honorable mention All-Region and All-WNYAC after scoring 16 goals and passing out a team high 36 assists. He scored two goals in five games and passed out three or more assists in seven contest. He had a season high nine points (2 goals and 7 assists) in a 19-14 win at SUNY Delhi.
Jolly, Mateo, and Grogan led the Pioneers to a 14.5 goals per game average which ranked the Blue and Gold 4th in Region III.
Defender Scott More (East Aurora) picked up honorable mention All-Region honors as well. More, the defensive captain, was called on to defend the opponents top scorer game in and game out. He finished the season with one goal and 41 ground balls.
Jolly and More will move on to NCAA lacrosse next season but Mateo and Grogan will return to anchor a 2009 Pioneer team looking to return to Region III Tournament.
