Members of UUP Honor NYS Sen. Catharine Young

Submitted by HoyerSM on Tue, 04/22/2008 - 10:29am

Rees & YoungMembers of UUP (United University Professions) at Alfred State College, gathered recently to honor NYS Sen. Catharine M. Young, (R-Olean), at a dinner recognizing her for being named "2008 Friend of SUNY" by the organization.  The nomination, which was generated by Alfred State College, read, in part:  "The Alfred Chapter of UUP has observed her dedication to projects on the Alfred campus.  In recent years, she has provided a member item of $4.9 million as start-up funding for the Center for Organic and Sustainable Agriculture.  Other funding she provided for this campus includes $100,000 toward the Center for Workforce Development on the ASC Wellsville campus.  Since beginning service in the Senate in 2005, Sen. Young has been available to ASC at major campus events, such as dedications, ground-breaking ceremonies, and graduations.  She has truly demonstrated her support for higher education at ASC.

"Her participation has not only been at Alfred, but at the SUNY Fredonia campus, where she advocated $1.7 million to provide a set of services to start-up companies.  She is well versed in the combined roles of education and the economic climate of the SUNY system in communities throughout New York state.  She has recently voted for a comprehensive higher education package which will make a college education affordable for our NYS students.  She is supporting the activity of making it easier for NYS veterans of all wars to attend college.  Education as an industry in New York state is also on her agenda."

Also attending the dinner was Phillip H. Smith, UUP statewide president.
