Blue and Gold open up New Stadium with Victory

The Alfred State College lacrosse team opened up the new on-campus athletic field with an impressive 18-10 victory over Mercyhurst North East on Tuesday afternoon.  The Pioneers outscored the Saints 7 to 2 in the 2nd quarter to take solid lead that they never relinquised.  With the win, A-State improves to 2-1 (1-0 Region III) while Mercyhurst falls to 2-4 (1-2 Region III).

The first quarter featured offensive outburst by both team.  Josh Mateo (Waterloo) scored as time expired in the first quarter to give ASC a 7-5 lead.  The Pioneers took the momentum and scored seven out of the next eight goals to lead 14-6.  Mercyhurst scored late in the second quarter to head into half trailing 14-7.  Both teams struggled to regain their offensive touch in the second half but the Pioneers added to their lead by outscoring MNE 4 to 3.

Mateo led ASC with six points on three goals and three assists while Mitch Wensel (Corning East) added four goals and an assist and Bill Jolly (Waterloo) added three goals and an assist.  Ben Rossignolo (Churchville) scored four goals while Brandon Moyer (Cazenovia) finished with two goals and an assist.  Ryan Grogan (Churchville) and Cory Mee (Churchville) each finished with a goal and two assists.  Grogan and Mateo led the Pioneers with 12 ground balls each while Moyer picked up seven.

Jeff Fabbri (West Warwick, RI) made four saves in the first half to earn the victory while Deljae Edwards (Syracuse/Nottingham) made three saves in the second half.  Scott More (East Aurora), led the defensive troop with seven ground balls.  Joe Fiacchi (Marcellus) and Trevor Wolf (East Aurora) each played well on defense.

The game marked the first athletic contest on the college's new multi-million dollar facility.  Two previous lacrosse games and a track and field meet had been cancelled due to poor weather conditions.  The new field-turf facility is the new home to lacrosse, football, track and field, and soccer.

The Pioneers hit the road on Thursday for a 4 p.m. contest at Genesee CC.
