Hughson finishes 8th at NYS Championships

Jordan Hughson (Holley) was earned an 8th place finish at the annual New York State Championships this weekend at the University of Buffalo.  As a team, Alfred State finished 17th overall and 3rd in the NJCAA standings.

Hughson pinned Brandon Stark (Ithaca) in 3:32 in his opening match.  He fell in the quarterfinals to Wala Canario (Oneonta) but rebounded with a 8-2 win over Eddie Broderick (Wagner) to ensure a top eight finish after day one.  On day two Hugshon fell to Patrick Smith (Army) and then lost a decision to Chris Gandolfi (Nassau CC) in the 7th place match.

Hughson was one of five Pioneers that competed in the A brackets while Mike Gustafason (Warren Area) was 1-2 in competition in the B bracket.  He picked up a 5-3 win over Ryan Cornell (Wagner) in his opening round match.

The United States Military Academy took first place overall with the University of Buffalo coming in 2nd.  The NYS Championships is held annually and features every school in the state that has an intercollegiate wrestling team.

The Pioneers return to WNYAC action on Wednesday when they host Mercyhurst North East at 7 p.m. at the Orvis Activities Center.
