A-State advances to Tournament Finals

The Alfred State College women's basketball team started the contest on a 23-0 and eased to a 89-40 victory over Jefferson CC in their opening round contest of the 4th annual Alfred State Tournament.  The Lady Pioneers advance to the finals on Saturday and will take on Dean College at 2 p.m.

Sarah Flint (Westmoreland) had a career high 15 points on 7 for 11 shooting to lead the Lady Pioneers.  Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) finished with 13 points and nine boards while Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) and Kaila Smith (Alfred Almond) each finished with 10.  Kristin Abbott (Webster Thomas) and Hillary York (Canisteo Greenwood) finished with nine points each and Rechelle Brooks (Elmira Free) chipped in eight.

Joni Cullen led the Lady Cannoneers with 15 points while Linda Gruber finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and nine blocks.

ASC led 48-16 at half after shooting 46.3% from the field.  The Blue and Gold improved their shooting to 48.5% in the 2nd half.  JCC shot 24.6% (14 for 57) for the game.  The Pioneers held a 50 to 41 advantage on the boards and forced the Cannoneers into 25 turnovers.

In the other 1st round match-up, Dean jumped out to a 35-11 lead in the first ten minutes of the contest and went on to a 89-65 victory over Fulton Montgomery CC.  Diaysha Brewington led Dean with 23 points and 10 rebounds while Shelly Monahan finished with 22 points, eight assists, and six boards.  Mallory Nelson led FMCC with 26 points while Amber Shamberger added 18.

The Lady Pioneers have won four straight games to improve to 5-2 on the year.  They also have won five straight contests and have a 6-1 record all-time in ASC Tournament history.
