Lady Pioneers win ASC Tournament
The Alfred State College volleyball team went 5-0 and defended their title at the ASC Invitational on Saturday. The Lady Pioneers, ranked #6 in NJCAA Division III, have now won three tournaments this fall and have won 17 straight matches.
In pool play, the Lady Pioneers downed Broome CC (30-7 & 30-21), Tompkins Cortland CC (30-10 & 30-17), and Jefferson CC (30-21 & 30-14).
Jenni Jerome (Syracuse/Westhill) led the way versus BCC with seven kills and five digs. Melissa Jones (Wayland Cohocton) added four kills and four aces while Elaina Braun (Waterloo) passed out 25 assists.
Jerome was tough again versus TCCC. She led the team with seven kills. Georgia Buchholz (Andover) finished with seven kills and eight assists, Brianne McMahon (Buffalo/Sweet Home) added six kills, and Shannon Jablonski (Cheektowaga) had 10 digs and four kills. Braun passed out 22 assists.
Braun led the way with 23 assists, five service aces, five digs, and four kills versus Jefferson. Buchholz added 12 digs and five kills while McMahon finished with 10 kills and six digs. Jablonski finished with 12 digs.
The Pioneers matched up with Corning CC in the semifinals and downed the Red Barons 2-0 (30-22 & 30-22). McMahon led the way with nine kills and six digs while Jablonski led the team with 16 digs and six kills. Jerome chipped in nine digs, Gregory finished with eight digs, and Braun passed out 20 assists.
In the finals, ASC and Jamestown CC (JCC downed Tompkins Cortland CC in the semifinals) split the first two games with the Pioneers winning the opener 30-20 before dropping game two 25-30. In the deciding game, ASC went on a solid push after the game was tied 8-8 to win 15-10.
McMahon led the way with 11 kills and 11 digs while Jablonski had 20 digs, eight kills, and three service aces. Gregory finished with 17 digs, Jerome had eight kills and nine digs, Buchholz had seven kills and eight digs. Braun passed out 30 assists.
McMahon was named the tournament MVP while Braun and Buchholz were named to the All-Tournament team. Jamestown's Brittany Christian and Becca Zimmerman along with Corning's Ashley Dann and Tompkins Cortland CC's Lindsey McCutchion were also named All-Tournament.
The Blue and Gold (25-2) have a few days off before wrapping up WNYAC regular season play on Thursday when they host Genesee CC at 6 p.m.
