Pioneers fall in final seconds

Dean College's Anthony Rodriguez hit Dreyan Willis with a 33-yard pass with five seconds remaining to lift the Bulldogs to a 34-28 victory over Alfred State on Saturday afternoon.  The scoring strike happened just 19 seconds after Jermell Corbitt (Naples, FL) connected with Mike Septh (Monroe Woodbury) on a six-yard score to tie the game at 28-28.

The Bulldogs remains undefeated, 6-0 (1-0 NFC) while the Pioneers fall to 2-4 (0-2 NFC).

Heading into the 4th quarter the game was tied 21-21.  Dean's Chris Griggs made it 28-21 with 13:04 remaining when he dove in from one-yard out to cap a 12 play, 61-yard drive. 

Alfred State could not tie the score in their following two possessions and were running out of time when Kyle Martin (New Paltz) forced a Dean fumble right at midfield with 2:13 remaining to give the Pioneers hope.

Corbitt marched his team down the field and found Septh in the corner of the endzone with 24 seconds remaining to tie the contest.

Griggs took the ensuing kick-off 53 yards to give Dean a chance to throw once to the endzone.  Rodriguez lofted a pass over the Pioneer defender and Willis kept his feet inbounds for the score.

Alfred State jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the 1st quarter behind two touchdowns in less than a minute.  Grant Tamme (Danville, KY) hit Calvin Corbin (Winslow, NJ) on a 38-yard pass play with 1:17 remaining and then Brian Abrams (Saranac Lake) returned an interception 30-yards for another score with 20 seconds remaining.

Rodriguez scored on a 7-yard scamper to cap a 10 play 80-yard drive with 11:52 remaining in the 1st half to draw Dean to 14-7.  He tied the game heading into halftime when he broke numerous tackles and scored from 45-yards out with just 44 seconds remaining.

Rodriguez and Willis connected on a 15-yard scoring pass play with 11:27 remaining in the 3rd to give the Bulldogs their first lead at 21-14.

The Pioneers tied it up with 4:58 remaining in the 3rd when Septh caught a 21-yard pass from Corbitt to cap a 7 play, 69-yard drive.

Rodriguez finished with 143 yards rushing (2 TD's) and 164 yards passing (10 for 22 with 2 TD's).  Willis caugh five passes for 104 yards and two scores while Griggs rushed the ball 12 times for 89 yards and a score.

Corbitt finished 11 for 16 for 142 yards and 2 TD's while Tamme was 4 for 6 for 73 yards and a score.  Corbin rushed for 48 yards on 10 carries and caught one pass for 38 yards and a score.  Tamme and Corbin both left the contest with injuries.  Septh recorded his fourth 100-yard receiving game of the year finishing with 125 yards and two scores on six receptions.

Jerome Pinckney led Dean with nine tackles while Roland Carrington added eight.  Jonathan Epke and Ramon Barber intercepted passes and Johnny Ray Barnes recovered a fumble.

Brandon Moyer (Cazenovia) led the Pioneers with 12 tackles while Andy Eichas (Hilton) added nine tackles.  Abrams finished with two interceptions.  Martin forced a fumble that was recovered by Josiah Jones (Syracuse/Onondaga).

The Pioneer will look to regroup next Saturday when they play their final non-conference game versus Berean Institute.  Opening kick-off is scheduled for Noon at Maple City Park.
