Library Exhibit of Dick Lang Pottery

Alfred State College's Walter C. Hinkle Memorial Library is currently hosting an exhibit of pottery by noted local craftsman Dick Lang in the library gallery.

Lang will also be exhibiting and selling his work in conjunction with the 20th Annual Allegany Artisans Studio Tour which will be held Saturday, October 13 and Sunday October 14 from 10 am to 5 pm at the studios of each of the 31 participants.  The Studio Tour is an annual cooperative venture that has grown to include artisans of diverse styles, tastes, and traditions working in a variety of media.  Brochures describing the tour are available at the Hinkle Library and at other locations throughout the area.  For more information visit the Allegany Artisans web site at:  www.alleganyartisans.com

On that site, Lang notes:

"I have been making pots since earning a BFA degree from Alfred College of Ceramics in 1973.  It has been a satisfying career bringing forms to life and knowing that they are enjoyed by many people.

"My work has gone through quite a few changes over the years.  I started with stoneware and switched to porcelain in 1981.  Recently, I built a new gas-fired kiln and have returned to making stoneware while continuing to make porcelain.  Even though I try many different techniques and ideas, I always have strived for simplicity and elegance in my designs.  I like simple forms, clean lines, and for the most part, glazes in subtle colors without painted designs.

"I like traditional Native American pots, Asian pots, Scandinavian pots, and pots with good form and glaze. They are a source of inspiration.  I have never tried to be an "academic" potter.  I just keep making pots, and they always seem to find a home.

"All the dinnerware is dishwasher and microwave safe. It is meant to be used and enjoyed."
