Special Teams and Defense lead Pios past X-Men

The Alfred State College football team scored three special teams touchdowns and two defensive touchdowns in a 49-14 victory over the Niagara X-Men in their 2007 home opener.  With the win the Pioneers improve to 2-1 on the year as they head into their Northeast Football Conference opener next weekend.

Calvin Corbin (Winslow, NJ) started the game off fast when he returned the opening kick-off 78 yards for a score.  Corbin made it 14-0 with 11:53 remaining in the 1st quarter when he returned an X-Men punt 50-yards for a score.

Mike Septh (Monroe Woodbury) caught a 52-yard pass from Grant Tamme (Danville, KY) with 3:51 remaining in the 1st quarter to make it 21-0.  Septh caught two passes for 109 yards on the 97-yard drive (the Pioneers were penalized on the drive).

Robbie Fagan (Miami, FL) made it 28-0 after the 1st quarter when he blocked a punt, recovered the punt and took it into the end zone.

Tamme found Geoff Hicks (Buffalo/Cleveland Hill) with a 16-yard pass with 9:55 remaining in the 2nd quarter to make it 35-0. 

Clifton Krotz (Cattaraugus Little Valley) capped the 1st half scoring when he returned a interception 98-yards, new school record, for a score.

The X-Men got their offense going in the 3rd quarter and scored on their first two possessions of the 2nd half.  Dave Benner connected with William Austin on a 63-yard scoring play with 13:02 remaining and then he connected with Brendon Conway on a 15-yard pass play with 9:47 remaining.

Brian Abrams (Saranac Lake) capped the scoring in the contest when he picked off an X-Men pass and returned it 48-yards for a score.

The Pioneers defense forced seven turnovers (six interceptions and one fumble recovery) on the day.  Abrams and John Chisolm (Trenton, NJ) both picked off two passes while Krotz, and Preston Washburn (Dundee) collected one.  Darryl Phillips (Rochester/Wilson) came up with the fumble recovery.

Jerome Griffin (Syracuse/Corcoran) led the defense with 11 tackles while Liorry Herrisnor (Herbert Lehman) made six tackles and Brandon Moyer (Cazenovia) made five.

Tamme finished the day 5 for 11 for 102 yards and two touchdowns, Septh caught two passes for 109 yards, and Jason Brand (Springfield, VA) rushed five times for 45 yards.  Corbin finished the day with 163 all-purpose yards.

The Pioneers begin NFC play on Saturday when they travel to Hudson Valley CC (Troy, NY) for a Noon kickoff versus the Vikings (2-1, 0-1 NFC).
