Volleyball falls in Semis

The Alfred State College volleyball team's streak of winning regular season tournaments was snapped on Saturday at the Jefferson CC Tournament.  The Lady Pioneers were 2-1 in pool play and advanced to the semifinals where they fell 2-1 to Corning CC.

The Pioneers opened up pool play with a 2-1 victory (30-11, 27-30, 15-7) over SUNY Delhi.  In their second match they fell 2-0 to Jamestown CC (29-31, 26-30).  They wrapped up pool play with a 2-0 victory over Jefferson CC (30-19, 30-18).  With the 2-1 record they advanced to the semifinals as the #2 seed.

In the semis, the Pioneers took the opening game 30-20 but the Red Barons rallied to win the next two matches, 30-32 and 12-15.

Brianne McMahon (Buffalo/Sweet Home) finished the day with 38 kills and 35 digs while Georgia Buchholz (Andover) led the team with a .364 hitting percentage and 15 kills.  Elaina Braun (Waterloo) passed out 87 assists, Shannon Jablonski (Cheektowaga) chipped in 18 kills and 24 digs.  Jeni Jerome (Westhill) added 15 kills and Natalie Gregory (Iroquois) finished with 11.

The Lady Pioneers return to action on Tuesday when they play their home opener versus Niagara CCC at 6 p.m.
