Pioneers win ASC Invitational

Zak WilliamsonThe Alfred State College cross country team swept the Alfred State College Invitational on Saturday morning in cold, wet, and windy conditions.  The men's team, currently ranked #7 in NJCAA Division III, scored a 22 while the women, currently ranked #6 in NJCAA Division III, scored a 23.

Alfred State sophomore Zak Williamson (Rocky Point) won the men's 8k (5 mile) race with a time of 30:14.51.  Lackawanna's Sean Craig finished 2nd (30:29.18), Seth Yernye (Erie CC) finished 3rd (30:35.50), and ASC freshmen Corey Smith (Wallkill) finished 4th (31:14.98).

Michael Kaplan (Tri-Valley) finished 8th (32:09.94), Sam Estes (Wheatland Chili) finished 9th (32:37.78), and Joshua Schmidbauer (Royalton-Hartland) finished 10th (32:47.79) to round out ASC's top five.

In the final team standing for the men's race: Broome CC finished 2nd with 63 points, Finger Lakes CC finished 3rd with 77 points, and Lackawanna College finished 4th with 81 points.

Erie CC's Anna Bogdanets won the women's 5k (3.1 mile) race with a strong time of 21:24.27.  Bogdanets teammate Sarah Furman finished 2nd (22:04.97) followed by Finger Lakes CC runner Emily Rodenhouse (23:20.73).

Rhea Cosay (White River, AZ) was the top Lady Pioneer finisher.  She crossed the finish line in 4th (23:26.64).  Jen Chan (Genesee Valley) finished 5th (25:18.80), Kaleigh Ligoci (Cicero North Syracuse) finished 9th (26:26.34), Sarah Sylvestor (Clarence) finished 10th (26:29.44), and Nicole D'Andrea (Rush Henrietta) finished 12th (27:43.19) for A-State

Finger Lakes CC finished 2nd in the women's race with 36 points. 

The Pioneers return to action next Saturday when they will compete in the Houghton College Invitational.  Action is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
