Disaster Relief Club
To improve the resiliency of communities prone or at risk to natural (and other) disasters.
Our vision is twofold. We strive to develop student leaders with skills and knowledge to positively impact communities who have suffered disasters, and to improve our partner communities disaster resilience.
This team provides relief services following a disaster. In most instances, they respond to natural disasters, but other forms of disasters that impact the lives of others will also be considered. Each member brings critical “applied learning” skills to the site. The coordination of projects occurs amongst club and team leaders. In most cases, the team members are not “first responders” but part of the team completing follow-up support. The team will coordinate projects and respond to multiple disasters as needed and as resources are available.
The disaster relief team includes members with experience completing civic engagement projects. For instance, members rerouted the Appalachin creek so that it would not flood the town of Appalachin in the future (watch news video clip). This project resulted in changing the condition of people’s lives. Building Trades students who participate in the Semester in the South program are involved with rebuilding homes in Mississippi and New Orleans with new construction techniques incorporated into new builds/rebuilds so that they would be better able to sustain hurricane damage in the future.
