Management Living and Learning Community Opportunity - Fall 2009

Living and Learning Community Opportunity image Twenty-six first year students will be selected to participate in a year-long Management Living and Learning Community. Students will live together on a coed floor in Burdick Hall. You will take two classes together in the fall semester and one class in the spring semester. These three classes will be taught in Burdick Hall, conveniently located only one floor away from your residence hall room.

Connecting Management Concepts and Skills to Sustainability

This unique college experience is designed for first year students who are interested in exploring managerial concepts such as supervision, planning, and organizing. This program will develop individuals with a better understanding of what it means to lead, to become entrepreneurial in a world that is looking for solutions through effective team management, and the important relationship between sustainability initiatives, leadership, and management techniques. Baccalaureate and associate degree seeking students in the School of Management and Engineering Technology and the School of Arts and Sciences are invited to apply.

Students who participate in our Management Living and Learning Community have a distinct advantage over other students. Research shows that students who live in a Living and Learning Community have a higher GPA and are more likely to succeed in college than those who do not. They participate in a variety of management and leadership related events and activities throughout the year designed to increase their development, skills, and networking opportunities. The Management Living and Learning Community opportunity also allows students an exciting opportunity to work closely with our faculty in residence to explore the relationship between what is learned in the classroom and how it applies to experiences in real life - an important connection for students who want to "hit the ground running" both in college and in preparation for the future.

A faculty member will live on the floor and will coordinate evening activities with two Management Living and Learning Community peer advisers and the Resident Assistant (RA) on the floor. Faculty who teach these classes will also spend time with students outside of the class attending evening events and joining students for meals in Central Dining Hall. It is our goal that your residential and classroom experience becomes a seamless one where learning and living are integrated. Studies show that is when the most exciting learning occurs!

Alfred State College is becoming a leader in sustainability with our proposed wind farm, our current use of bio-diesel technologies, our home-grown hydroponic produce for our cafeterias, and the introduction of our new organic dairy herd. The campus is a living laboratory of new sustainability technologies as we are training the leaders to develop, manage, and market these new technologies to the world. Students in the Management Living and Learning Community will be on the cutting edge of this new field.
