Information Literacy Instruction

Faculty - are your students information literate? Most students may be "computer literate" but they are NOT "information literate". Would you like your students to know how to access the journal articles, reference materials, and quality web sites in their field? Do you think it is important for students to learn how to evaluate the information they use for accuracy, point-of-view, and authority? Would you like some advice on creating interesting library research assignments?

Encourage Better Writing by Encouraging Better Research

• Create effective library assignments
  • Relate to course goals and tie in with other course assignments
  • Match the educational level of the students
  • Communicate specific learning objectives
  • Stress tasks and resources as well as the topic
  • Require, for research papers, a working thesis and bibliography to be submitted early on
  • Encourage critical thinking by offering several possible topics and sources of answers
  • Require source evaluation as part of the assignment
  • Can usually be completed in whole or in part by using local resources
  • Involve collaboration with librarians and faculty ("assignment alert"; assignment design; scheduled instruction with a librarian)
• Please try to avoid
  • Giving research assignments before verifying that material is available in the Library
  • Assigning the exact same topic or assignment to everyone
  • Sending students on a "scavenger hunt"
  • Using "canned" library assignments from workbooks
  • Incorrect citations-ask us first.
• Explore the Hinkle Library Web site
  • Search reference databases in ASC and Alfred University's online catalogs
  • Find articles in general interest indexes with full-text
  • More resources are offered, specializing in full-text and citation indexes
  • Research help is available via on-line documentation guides and prepared research guides
  • Schedule a library research class geared to your subject area and assignment, request a resource list or web bibliography.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loans (ILL) are transactions in which library materials are made available by one library to another for the use of an individual. Books, periodical articles (in photocopy or fax form) and non-print materials may be requested. ILL service is available to all students, faculty and staff of Alfred State College.

Services to Persons with Disabilities

The Libraries of the SUNY College of Technology at Alfred endeavor to provide assistance and instruction which lead users to independent research, regardless of their ability. Though staff limitations make extensive individual assistance impossible, every effort will be made to assist users with reasonable requests to obtain needed information.

Come to the Circulation Desk at Hinkle Library to claim your lost item. These items will be held until the end of the semester, after which they will be donated or discarded.
