School of Applied Technology
This house is now complete and certified as a Gold NAHB Green Home.
Alfred State has constructed a Zero Energy Demonstration Home on the Wellsville campus. This showcase home was constructed completely by Alfred State students in 2009 to 2011 and is funded primarily by the Federal Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) and originally named the Green Home. The home was built to National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) green building standards and is certified Gold. The project has allowed the college to integrate green construction and renewable energy education into existing applied technology programs at the college. This project will continue to educate the future construction workforce in green building techniques including green construction, energy efficiency, and renewable energy systems including geothermal, solar thermal, photovoltaic and small wind. The home also has a Tempcast fireplace that is a high efficiency wood burning system. All of these systems have been included and the home is now a Zero Energy Demonstration Home. The home has a high-end monitoring and automation system funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) that includes temperature sensors to the full depth of the geothermal wells, insolation monitoring adjacent to solar thermal and photovoltaic systems and other monitoring and automation systems. The home is being used as an open laboratory for the public and Alfred State students. Additional basic monitoring for a home owner is also being added to the home.

Appalachian Regional Commission Federal Co-chair Visits ASC
Alfred State hosted Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), the New York Department of State (NYSDOS), and Southern Tier West Regional Development and Planning Board (STW) representatives in 2010, at the School of Applied Technology campus in Wellsville. The visitors met with ASC officials to review their partnerships with Alfred State.
Visitors included Earl F. Gohl who was appointed by President Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 10, 2010 as federal co-chair of the ARC. He is the 11th federal co-chair to be appointed since the Commission was established by an act of Congress in 1965. George Korchowsky, Land Use Training Specialist (LUTS II) with the Department of State’s Division of Local Government working for the New York State Appalachian Regional Commission, accompanied the federal co-chair on the Alfred State visit. read more
