Goal 4: Model for Sustainability

Organic agriculture has served as an example of sustainable enterprise that other sectors have sought to emulate. Alfred State College is committed to reducing its carbon footprint, and the management of the college farm and agricultural lands will make a significant contribution towards fulfilling that commitment.

The Animal Welfare Institute has partnered with Alfred State College to establish a facility to teach humane livestock production. COSA has additional partnerships with Cornell University, Penn State University, and Northeast Organic Farmers Association-New York to conduct research that will benefit organic farmers. With the new land in Groveland, NY transitioning to organic production, research opportunities are expected to expand.

A sustainable enterprise must be profitable, and marketing is key to making a profit. Students have access to opportunities where they can learn the practical skills required to market what they produce. COSA also works with enterprises throughout the region to identify and grow markets.
