Alfred State has been named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, one of the highest honors a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement.

Court reporting and captioning students at Alfred State are marketing National Court Reporting and Captioning Week, Feb. 17-23 by participating in a national veteran’s oral history project coordinated by the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA), the leading organization representing stenographic court reporting and broadcast captioning professionals.

“We are very pleased to see our community garden gain national recognition,” said Julian Dautremont-Smith, Alfred State’s chief sustainability officer. “The garden has generated a great deal of excitement on campus and in the community and is helping people connect more directly with their food production and consumption, a key for sustainability.”
Alfred State has been recognized by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) for its leadership in sustainability. NWF has featured a detailed case study about Alfred State’s Community Garden in an online database of campus sustainability initiatives.

Alfred State has been named to the coveted Military Friendly Schools® list by Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life.

Alfred State has been authorized to establish a student chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). The new student organization will debut on the Wellsville campus this year and will distinguish Alfred State as one of only 26 educational organizations in the country that operates a student-led chapter of the NECA organization.
Jonathan Maragni, from Ithaca and a student at Alfred State School of Applied Technology (Wellsville), was awarded the college/postsecondary gold medal in Electrical Construction Wiring.
Students from New York high school and college technical education programs won the nation’s highest awards at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. Industry leaders representing over 1,100 businesses, corporations, trade associations and unions recognized the students for their demonstrated excellence in 94 hands-on occupational and leadership contests, such as robotics, criminal justice, aviation maintenance and public speaking.
In May 2012, ACES brought home some more hardware in the form of another gold award from NACUFS for a catered special event at the Lake Lodge. The Dining Services team is part of Auxiliary Campus Enterprises and Services Inc. (ACES), the not-for-profit corporation that provides dining services on campus.
Alfred State’s dining services is on a winning streak. After winning a gold award in 2011 from the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) for a Residential Dining special event, in April 2012 they grabbed a regional finalist position in the New York State Beef Council’s Best New York Burger contest. Now in May 2012 they are bringing home some more hardware in the form of another gold award from NACUFS for a catered special event at the Lake Lodge.
