Whoever said you can’t cook outdoors in below-freezing weather using only the heat of the sun? Faculty members from two different departments at Alfred State College recently joined their respective expertise to bake bread in a solar oven!
Do you want to grow your own food? Need the space and tools to do it? Never gardened before but want to learn how? Are you an experienced gardener who wants to share what you know with beginning gardeners and learn new techniques from other gardeners? Alfred State College’s Green Team is calling all types of gardeners to put down roots in a new community garden hosted by the Center for Organic and Sustainable Agriculture (COSA).
This session features a lineup of professionals within the renewable energy fields of PV (solar electric), wind energy, solar thermal, geothermal, and energy conservation and weatherization will speak on the basic terminology and considerations homeowners and business owners need to know.
Alfred State College is once again partnering with Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES to sponsor the second annual Renewable Energy and Conservation Methods Information night, Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, 6:45-8:30 p.m., at the BOCES Center, 1825 Windfall Rd., Olean.
“I worked for ACES catering when I was in college and over the summer and I knew that they sometimes used edible flowers for their dishes. I approached Bron Norasethaporn, the catering manager, to see if he would be willing to buy flowers from me,” Kacalski said.
Sometimes, the stars are misaligned and a farmer or a gardener is born into the wrong city. When it happens, those budding individuals must make their own way to a place where they can become rooted – a place where their passion for plants and agriculture can thrive. It happened this way for Tom Kacalski, Alfred State College ’06, ’09. And now Kacalski is providing specialized growing services for Alfred State’s Dining Services.
The newly retooled car can travel 50 miles per charge, dependent on terrain and driving habits; can reach a top speed of 81 mph; can achieve 0-60 mph in 28 seconds. The car can be charged in four hours to charge on 220Volts, and eight hours on 115Volts.
Alfred State College students enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering Technology Department programs recently handed over the keys to an electric car to College President Dr. John M. Anderson for campus use.
Clark’s presentation, Green Schools, Sustainable Communities, was part of the Green Colleges and Universities: Greening Your Campus Operations discussions at the conference. Clark’s presentation detailed the activities Alfred State College is conducting to become greener and what steps are being taken to address the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment signed by Alfred State Colleg
Craig R. Clark, dean, School of Applied Technology at Alfred State College, recently presented at an Appalachian Regional Commission conference in Rome, GA.
Anderson notes that he is “proud to join my colleagues in this necessary and worthwhile endeavor. Colleges play a vital role in preparing our nation’s workforce and in acting as agents of economic change. I wholeheartedly embrace this opportunity to train workers for high-growth jobs in the green economy and educate students about the importance of sustainability.”
