Alfred State athletic director and former Springfield College coach Daryl Arroyo will be inducted into the National Wrestling Coaches Association DIII Hall of Fame this weekend at a ceremony in conjunction with the 2012 DIII National Championships in LaCrosse, WI.

Tyler Peet (Unadilla Valley) and Josh Simmons (Campbell Savona) earned All-Northeast District, All-Region, and All-WNYAC honors after qualifying for the NJCAA National Championships.

Haley Witchella (Oxford Academy) and Tyler Peet (Unadilla Valley) have been named the Alfred State athletes of the week by the SID office.

Witchella recorded two double-doubles in the Lady Pioneers victories this week. She scored 34 points, grabbed 26 rebounds, and blocked six shots in a win at Genesee CC and recorded 12 points, 16 rebounds, and three blocks in a win vs. Jamestown CC. Withchella is averaging 16.8 ppg this season and 11.1 rpg for the 18-8 Lady Pioneers.
Alfred State wrestler Tyler Peet (Gilbertsville/Unadilla Valley) was 2-2 in the 149 lb. weight class at the NJCAA National Championships. Peet accounted for all of the Pioneers 5.5 points in the event.

Peet enters the national championship with a 13-3 record. During the year, he was the 149 lb. champion at the Ithaca Open and finished 2nd at both the JCC Open and the Northeast Districts. He is making his second trip to Nationals and looks to improve on his 6th place finish in 2011.

The NCAA Division III membership committee announced this week that it has granted exploratory status to the Alfred State athletic program. Alfred State submitted the NCAA application in January.

“Moving to NCAA is a natural evolution in creating a four-year college environment at Alfred State. We are excited about the prospects of having our athletes compete for four years wearing the blue & gold,” said Alfred State President, John Anderson.

Mercyhurst North East won the final four matches of the evening as they defeated Alfred State 38-15 in the Pioneers final home dual of the season. Alfred is now 4-4 (1-4 WNYAC) on the season in dual action while Mercyhurst is now 5-6 (5-1 WNYAC).

The Saints jumped out to a 11-0 lead via a tech fall by Aaron Smith at 125 and a Pioneer forfeit victory at 133. Justin Hunt (Ripley) got the blue & gold on the board with a 6-0 decision over Aaron Lett at 141 lbs.
