Lady Pioneers Press Past Roberts JV

The Alfred State College women's basketball team used a solid press to down Roberts Wesleyan JV 49-46 to snap a four-game slide and improve to 7-4 on the year.

The Lady Pioneers trailed by as many as 12 points early on in the contest before putting on the press to climb back into the game and grab a 30-23 halftime lead.  ASC and Roberts battled the rest of the way but the Pioneers held on for the victory.

Camille Romero (Queens Village/Mary Louis) led the way for the blue & gold with 18 points while Amie Brooks (Pavilion) finished with 13.

Romero and Kozlowski Named ASC Athletes of the Week

Alfred State College sophomores Camille Romero (Queens Village/Mary Louis) and Braden Kozlowski (N. Tonawanda) have been named the ASC Athletes of the Week by the SID office.

Romero netted 26 points vs. Finger Lakes CC and then had 29 points vs. Cuyahoga CC.  She has now scored 20 or more points in each of the Lady Pioneers last five games.  She is averaging 21.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.1 steals, and 2.6 assists per game.

Lady Pioneers Can't Rally Back

The Alfred State College women's basketball team couldn't rally all the way back and suffered a 67-60 loss in Cleveland, OH to Cuyahoga CC.  The Lady Pioneers trailed 33-27 at half and by as many as 12 but cut it to three in the final minute, 63-60, but couldn't get any closer.

Camille Romero (Quees Village/Mary Louis) recorded over twenty points in her 5th straight game.  She led ASC with 29 points on Friday.  Carriola Chambers (Manhattan/Facing History) chipped in 12 pionts while Amie Brooks (Pavilion) had nine.

Playing for the first time in ten days, the Alfred State College women's basketball team dropped a 62-61 battle at Finger Lakes CC.  The Lady Pioneers are now 6-3 on the season.

With the game tied at 61 with 21 seconds left, FLCC was able to hit one of two foul shots to take the one-point lead.  The Pioneers grabbed the rebound on the missed second shot and raced down the court but were unable to score in two attempts.  ASC fouled FLCC again with six seconds left and got the ball back still trailing by one but could not get the game-winner to fall.

Champagne Hazel led the Raiders with 24 poins while Monae Abrams chipped in 16 points and 13 rebounds.  Both Hazel and Abrams were named All-Tournament.  Cheryl Osborne added 10 points for Fulton who finished 2-0 in the classic format tournament.

The Alfred State College women's basketball team could never recover from a big run in the 1st half as they fell 72-60 to Hagerstown CC in the opening day of the ASC Tournament.  Hagerstown used a 12-0 run midway through the 1st half to grab the lead and never looked back.

Hagerstown led 33-21 at halftime and led by as many as 16 in the 2nd half before the Lady Pioneers rallied within three points but could not get any closer.

Romero and Brooks lead Lady Pioneers to victory

Camille Romero (Queens Village/Mary Louis) and Amie Brooks (Pavilion) combined for 52 points as the Alfred State College women's basketball continued their fast start to the 2011-12 season with a 71-66 win over Corning CC.  The Lady Pioneers are now 6-0 on the year.

Romero was 10 for 25 on the day and led all scorers with 27.  She added five rebounds and five assists.  Brooks was 7 for 21 (5 for 10 from three) to finish with 25 points.  She added five steals and four rebounds.

Witchella and Johnson Named ASC Athletes of the Week

Alfred State College freshman forward Haley Witchella (Oxford Academy) and sophomore football player Colter Johnson (Warren, PA) have been named the ASC Athletes of the Week by the SID office.

Witchella averaged 24 points per game in the Lady Pioneers two victories on the week.  She scored 48 points including the game-winning three-pointer in the final seconds of a victory over Cayuga CC on the week. She also collected 26 rebounds and blocked ten shots.

The Alfred State College women's basketball team won, 68-46 over SUNY Orange, their fifth straight to start the 2011-12 season.

Haley Witchella (Oxford Academy) led the Lady Pioneers with 23 points while Amie Brooks (Pavilion) and Camille Romero (Queens Village/Mary Louis) each had 12.  Nuri Bey (Bronx/HS Computer Technology) chipped in seven.

ASC led 33-17 at halftime.

The Pioneers return to action Tuesday when they host Corning CC at 5:30 p.m.

Haley Witchella (Oxford Academy) connected on a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining to give Alfred State a 65-64 lead en route to a 67-64 victory over Cayuga CC.  The Lady Pioneers are now 4-0 on the season.

Witchella's game-winning three-pointer was part of her team high 25 points.  Amie Brooks (Pavilion) added 13 and Camille Romero (Queens Village/Mary Louis) had 10.  ASC had a 37-32 halftime lead.
