Lady Pioneers fall to Genesee CC

The Alfred State College women's basketball team suffered their first WNYAC loss of the season, 73-53, to #10 Genesee CC.  The loss drops the Lady Pioneers to 11-5 (2-1 WNYAC) while the Lady Cougars improve to 17-2 overall.

Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) led ASC with 16 points while Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) recorded another double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Desaundra Carr (Boys & Girls) chipped in seven points.

Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) was 10 for 23 from the field and 10 for 14 from the foul line as Alfred State defeated Mercyhurst North East 74-63 in their Western New York Conference opener.

McLaughlin finished with a game high 30 points and added seven assists and five rebounds.  Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) recorded another double-double with 18 points on 7 for 11 shooting and 10 boards.

Sarah Flint (Westmoreland) added seven points while Sherelle Brooks (Elmira Free) finished wiht six points.  ASC shot 42.9% from the field and 70.8% from the foul line.

Lady Pioneers fall in last seconds

The Alfred State College women's basketball team fell 52-50 to Medaille College JV in their first contest of 2008 and their first contest in over a month.  Medaille hit two foul shots in the final ten seconds to break a 50-50 tie.

Athletes Back on Campus

Alfred State College athletes are back on campus preparing to begin play in 2008.  The men's and women's basketball teams, the wrestling team, and the swimming team began practicing on Sunday while the Indoor Track & Field team returns to campus on Thursday.

Smith Named Region Athlete of the Week

Anthia SmithAlfred State College sophomore forward Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) has been named the Region III Female Athlete of the Week.  Smith had double-doubles in both of the Lady Pioneers victories this past week.

Last Tuesday, Smith led ASC to a 78-72 victory over Finger Lakes CC with 18 points and 26 rebounds (11 of her rebounds were on the offensive glass).  She was 5 for 14 from the field and 8 for 12 from the foul line.

The Alfred State College women's basketball team wrapped up the the 2007 portion with a hard fought 78-71 victory over SUNY Orange.  The Lady Pioneers have three straight and eight of their last nine and are 9-3 on the year.

Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) led A-State with 23 points while Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) recorded her ninth double-double with 22 points and 18 rebounds.  Sherelle Brooks (Elmira Free) had a huge game with eight points, 13 assists, and nine rebounds.

The contest was back and forth most of the way.  With Alfred leading 51-50 the Lady Pioneers went on a 15 to 5 run to push the lead to double digits for the first time.  Once ahead by double-digits, ASC never looked back and held off any comeback hopes.

For the second time in eight days the Alfred State College women's basketball team won a tight contest versus Dean College.  On Sunday afternoon in Franklin, MA the Lady Pioneers improved to 7-3 on the year with a 79-70 victory.

Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) led A-State with 25 pionts while Sherelle Brooks (Elmira Free) had a career high 17 points.  Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) and Christina Loder (Brantford, ONT.) each finished with 11 while Sarah Flint (Westmoreland) chipped in 8 points.

Lady Pioneers hang tough but fall at CCRI

The Alfred State College women's basketball team hung tough with #18 CC of Rhode Island but the Lady Knights used a strong second half en route to a 69-50 victory.  The Lady Pioneers five game winning streak was snapped and the team sits at 6-3 on the season while CCRI improves to 6-2.

CCRI led 37-33 at half and the game was still within striking distance for the Lady Pioneers until the final five minutes when the Knights pushed the lead out.
