Seniors Go Out In Style by Upsetting Genesee

The five seniors at Alfred State College made their last home game at the Orvis Activities Center a memorable with a 64-59 victory over #9 Genesee CC on Thursday evening.  With the win the Lady Pioneers improve to 16-8 (7-4 WNYAC & 7-2 Region III Division II) while the Lady Cougars fall to 20-4 (8-3 WNYAC & 8-1 Region III Division II).

Lady Pioneers fall in overtime

Mercyhurst North East rallied from a 15-point second half deficit and defeated Alfred State College 65-63 in overtime.  A-State falls to 15-8 (6-4 WNYAC & 6-2 Region III Division II) while Mercyhurst North East improves to 12-15 (5-6 WNYAC).

The Lady Pioneers led 29-22 at half but pushed the lead to 43-28 with 11:33 remaining.  MNE went on a run and eventually tied the game at 54-54 with 1:55 remaining.  The teams traded baskets and turnovers in closing minutes of regulation.  The Saints had the final two shots in regulation but couldn't capitalize.

The Alfred State College women's basketball team got solid contributes from Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) and Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) in a 73-61 victory over Erie CC on Tuesday evening.  With the win the Lady Pioneers improve to 15-7 (6-3 WNYAC & 6-1 Region III Division II).

The Alfred State College women's basketball team fell 81-42 to Monroe CC in a WNYAC contest on Saturday afternoon.  The Lady Tribunes improve to 13-6 overall while the Lady Pioneers fall to 14-7 (5-3 WNYAC).

Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) recorded her 15th double-double of the season and third this week leading the Lady Pioneers with 19 points and 14 rebounds.  Kristin Abbott (Webster Thomas) chipped in eight points off the bench while Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) added six.

Lady Pios edge Jamestown

The Alfred State College women's basketball team squeezed past Jamestown CC 50-45 in a game where neither team could get the offense going.  ASC improves to 13-6 (4-2 WNYAC) on the year while JCC falls to 12-10.

Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) and Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) combined to score 36 of the Lady Pioneers 50 points on the day.  Smith recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds while McLaughlin finished with 16 points. 

Lacey Grove led the Jayhawks with 13 points while Kari Barmore finished with 11 points and 12 boards.

Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) led the Lady Pioneers with 14 points while Anthia Smith chipped in 12 points.  The Lady Pioneers were held to 33.3% (17 for 51) shooting and turned the ball over 30 times.

The Alfred State College women's basketball team bounced back from their first WNYAC loss on Tuesday with an impressive 81-31 victory over Niagara County CC on Thursday evening.  ASC improves to 12-5 (3-1 WNYAC) with the victory.

McLaughlin Named National Player of the Week

Alfred State College sophomore forward Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) has been named the NJCAA Division II co-player of the week.  McLaughlin shares the honor with Megan Waggoner (Johnson County CC).

McLaughlin led the Lady Pioneers to 2-1 record from January 20 to January 26.  During that period she averaged 29.7 points per game, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists.

Both Basketball Teams Receving Votes in National Poll

Both the Alfred State College men's and women's basketball teams received votes in the NJCAA Division II poll released this morning.  This is the first time this season either team has been in the poll.

The women's team came into the week with a 11-4 record.  They are led by Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville).  McLaughlin is averaging 21.6 points per game while her teammate Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) is averaging 16.7 points and 13.9 rebounds a game.
