Pioneers Split Tri-Match

The Alfred State volleyball team split a pair of matches in a Region III Division III tri-match at Finger Lakes CC.  The Pioneers fell 3-0 (19-25, 15-25, 25-27) to #5 Monroe CC and the rebounded for a 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22)victory over Finger Lakes CC.  Alfred is now 9-4 on the year and 5-1 in RIII DIII play.

Lady Spikers Tripped up By Monroe

The Alfred State volleyball team fell 18-25, 20-25, 25-18, 17-25 to Monroe CC in a WNYAC match in the Orvis Activities Center. The Lady Tribunes improve to 11-0, 2-0 WNYAC while the Lady Pioneers fall to 8-3, 0-2 WNYAC.

Lera Braun (Waterloo) led the way with 27 assists and 19 digs.  Sarah Linn (Portville) registered 11 digs and 11 kills, Kay Pfleghardt (Tioga) had 17 digs and 12 kills, and Jess Ramsey (Tioga) finished with 13 digs.

Erica Thompson (Cicero) led Monroe with 14 kills and 10 blocks while Denae Rinaldo (Canastota) finished with 19 digs and 11 kills.

Lady Pioneers Sweep Alfred Pod

The Alfred State volleyball team swept all four matches of the Alfred Pod on Saturday. With the sweep the Lady Pioneers are 8-2 on the year and 4-0 in Region III Division III play.

The blue & gold defeated Fulton Montgomery CC (25-23, 31-29, 25-19), Columbia Greene CC (25-8, 25-8, 25-16), Hudson Valley CC (25-7, 25-10, 25-17), and SUNY Adirondack (26-24, 25-17, 25-15).

The Alfred State volleyball team fell 22-25, 25-11, 18-25, 20-25 to Genesee CC in their WNYAC opener. The Lady Pioneers are now 4-2 on the year while the Lady Cougars are 5-8.

Pfleghardt Named Region and Alfred State Athlete of the Week

Sophomore volleyball player Kay Pfleghardt (Tioga) has been named both the Region III and Alfred State athlete of the week. Pfleghardt helped the Lady Pioneers to a 4-1 record and a runner-up finish at the annual Alfred State Invitational this past weekend.

Volleyball Finishes 4-1 at Alfred State Invite

The Alfred State volleyball team opened up their 2012 season with an impressive day at the Alfred State Invitational. The hosts won their first four matches but fell in the tournament final to Butler CCC 25-17, 25-23.

The Pioneers didn't drop a match in pool play.  They defeated Baltimore City CC 25-19, 25-8, Butler 25-19, 25-11, and Herkimer CCC 25-17, 25-19 to earn the top spot in Pool.  In the semifinals they downed Nassau CC 25-13, 25-17 to set up a rematch with Butler.  Butler was able to hold off the Lady Pioneers to capture their second straight Alfred Sta

Four Athletes Honored for Academic Excellence

Four Alfred State student-athletes were honored by the NJCAA for their excellence in the classroom. Thomas Anderson (Sodus) and Amanda Bush (Altoona, PA) earned the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement while Joe Markel (Arkport) and Zinta Rutins (Silver Spring, MD) earned the NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement.

NCAA grants exploratory status to Alfred State

The NCAA Division III membership committee announced this week that it has granted exploratory status to the Alfred State athletic program. Alfred State submitted the NCAA application in January.

 “Moving to NCAA is a natural evolution in creating a four-year college environment at Alfred State. We are excited about the prospects of having our athletes compete for four years wearing the blue & gold,”  said Alfred State President, John Anderson.

Lady Spikers Earn Postseason Awards

Alfred State College sophomore volleyball players Mandy Bush (Altoona, PA) and Meghan Kraus (Trumansburg) have been named All-Region.  While Bush, Kraus, and Kay Pfleghardt (Tioga) were named All-WNYAC.

Bush appeared in 124 of the Lady Pioneers 129 games played.  She passed out 903 assists (7.28/game), collected 253 digs (2.04/game), and recorded 99 kills (0.8/game).  She also recorded 32 service aces and 32 blocks.  Bush was a 2nd team All-Region selection and a 1st team All-WNYAC choice.
