NCAA grants exploratory status to Alfred State

The NCAA Division III membership committee announced this week that it has granted exploratory status to the Alfred State athletic program. Alfred State submitted the NCAA application in January.

 “Moving to NCAA is a natural evolution in creating a four-year college environment at Alfred State. We are excited about the prospects of having our athletes compete for four years wearing the blue & gold,”  said Alfred State President, John Anderson.

Five New Members Inducted into Athletic Hall of Fame

2011 Hall of Fame ClassDuring Homecoming 2011, five Alfred State College athletic alumni were inducted into the athletic department hall of fame.  Swimmer John Meade, track & field athlete Damian Rodriguez, lacrosse player Matthew Covert, baseball player Joe Greany, and swimmer Ashley Vogl will join the 56 inducted athletes.

Arroyo Named New Alfred State Athletic Director

Alfred State College Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Steve Tyrell has announced that Dr. Daryl Arroyo has been named the new Director of Athletics, Physical Education, Recreation and Intramurals.  Arroyo, who succeeds Kathy Feldman, begins his new duties at Alfred State on June 29.

Pioneers Lacrosse Garners Honors

The Alfred State College lacrosse team had four players honored by Region III and two players honored by the Western New York Athletic Conference.

Freshman midfielder Mike Hart (Ajax, ONT) was named 1st team All-Region after leading the Pioneers in goals, points, and ground balls.  Hart finished the campaign with 42 goals, nine assists (51 points), and 77 ground balls.  Hart recorded hat tricks in nine of the Pioneers 14 games.  He had season high five goal games versus Onondaga CC and Tompkins Cortland CC.

Pioneers Lose Heartbreaker in OT

The Alfred State College lacrosse team ended their 2011 season with a heartbreaking 14-13 overtime loss at Tompkins Cortland CC on Saturday. 

The Alfred State College lacrosse team ended their 2011 season with a heartbreaking 14-13 overtime loss at Tompkins Cortland CC on Saturday. 

In a back and forth contest, the Panthers took a 13-12 lead with 1:32 remaining only to have the Pioneers score with 55 seconds left in regulation to force the extra session.  ASC won the opening face-off of OT but their scoring attempt was deflected and resulted in a Panther possession in which they were able to capitalize for the victory.

Hornets Sting Pioneers

Broome CC defeated Alfred State 22-4 in a Region III Division III lacrosse contest in Binghamton.  The Hornets improve to 9-6 on the year.

Mike Hart (Ajax, ONT) recorded another hat trick to lead the Pioneer offense.  Dan Weimer (Derby/Lake Shore) scored the other goal while Justin Smith (Bloomingdale/Saranac Lake) and Chance Lowry (Waterloo) each recorded an assist.

Brad Stowell (Marcellus) made 22 saves in net.

The Pioneers wrap up their campaign on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest at Tompkins Cortland CC.

Jefferson Uses Strong 2nd Half to defeat ASC

Jefferson CC outscored Alfred State 7-3 in the 2nd half to earn a 9-5 victory in the Pioneers 2011 home finale.

JCC (10-4) led 2-0 after one but ASC answered and tied it at 2-2 heading into half.  The Cannoneers scored the first six of the second half to take control of the contest.

Mike Hart (Ajax, ONT) led the blue & gold with three goals while Pat Umphries (Heuvelton) passed out two assists.  Chance Lowry (Waterloo) and Brad Zacher (Medina) both scored while Keith Maloney (Brewster) had an assist.

The Alfred State College lacrosse team found the back of the net ten times in a 32-10 loss to #1 ranked Onondaga CC.  The ten goals scored against OCC (12-0) ties the most allowed by the Lazers in a game this season.

The Alfred State College lacrosse team battled tough but fell two goals short in a 16-14 loss at Niagara CCC.  The Pioneers led 6-4 after the first quarter but were outscored 10-4 in the middle quarters and couldn't recover.

FLCC Rallies for Victory

The Alfred State College lacrosse team led 3-2 after one quarter and 6-5 at halftime but Finger Lakes CC outscored the Pioneers 10-2 in the second half for the 15-8 victory.  FLCC improves to 6-6 while ASC falls to 0-9.

Chance Lowry (Waterloo) and Mike Hart (Ajax, ONT) each scored two goals while Kevin Gardrvits (Glen Cove) scored a goal and passed out an assist.  Keith Maloney (Brewster), Shawn Hanrahan (Unadilla/Unatego), and Danny Weimer (Derby/Lake Shore) all found the back of the net once.
