Murphy and Wood Named ASC Athletes of the Week

Cross Country runner Tara Murphy (Rochester/Wilson) and football player John Wood (Rochester/East) have been named the ASC Athletes of the Week by the Sports Information department.

Murphy led the #1 ranked Lady Pioneers with a 38th place finish at the Houghton College Invitational.  She finished the 5k course as the top NJCAA runner in a race featuring mostly 4-year school competition in 20:02.77.  ASC finished in 10th place in the competition.

Pioneers Run Past Bulldogs

440 yards of offense and an 87-yard kickoff return sent the Homecoming crowd home happy as Alfred State defeated Stevens Tech 49-27.  The win improves ASC to 2-1 on the year while Stevens Tech is now 2-2.

The Bulldogs and the Pioneers traded touchdown drives in the first quarter.  Greg Hampton (Uniondale) connected with Devin Simmons (Elmira Free) on pass plays of 12 and 7-yards to answer Bulldog scoring drives.  ASC led 14-13 after the first quarter as the Pioneers blocked a Stevens PAT.

Furious Comback Falls Short

Trailing 23-14 with 2:51 remaining, Alfred State rallied to within 23-21 and had the ball in the final minute but could not capitalize and fell to Erie CC in another thrilling edition of the annual battle between Western New York rivals.

Erie looked to have the game locked up with just under three minutes left in the game when Rory Spain (Tully) recovered a fumble and gave the Pioneers life.  Five plays later Greg Hampton (Uniondale) found Devin Simmons (Elmira Free) for a 21-yard scoring play.  Simmons tip-toed down the sideline for the last 10 yards.

Fox and Hampton Named ASC Athletes of the Week

The Alfred State College sports information department has named Tiffany Fox (Canisteo Greenwood) and Greg Hampton (Uniondale) the college's athletes of the week.

The Alfred State College sports information department has named Tiffany Fox (Canisteo Greenwood) and Greg Hampton (Uniondale) the college's athletes of the week.

Fox, a sophomore forward, was a key playmaker in the Lady Pioneers season opening 8-0 win over SUNY Delhi.  Fox passed out three assists in the victory.

Hampton, a sophomore quarterback, was 9 for 19 for 154 yards passing in the Pioneers 21-10 victory over Brockport JV.  Hampton connected on three scoring passes, 25 and 15 yards to Devin Simmons (Elmira Free) and 62 yards to Erik Simmons (Elmira Free).

The Alfred State College football team will have to wait a few more days to open up the home portion of their season.  The scheduled contest between ASC and Buffalo State JV on September 12 has been cancelled.

The Pioneers (1-0) now will have the next 10 days off before hosting Region III rival Erie CC on September 17.  Kickoff for that game is slated for 7 p.m.

Pioneers Win Opener

The Alfred State College football team capitalized on mistakes as they defeated Brockport JV 21-10 in their 2011 season opener.  The Pioneers now have won four straight season openers.

The Pioneers got on the board in the 1st quarter when Greg Hampton (Uniondale) connected with Devin Simmons (Elmira Free) on a 25-yard scoring play. The drive was set up after Brockport botched a punt due to a high snap.

Brockport made it 6-2 a few minutes later when the Pioneers had a punting miscue.  The 4th down snap sailed into the endzone and ASC was forced to take the safety.

Alfred State Releases Football Schedule

The 2011 Alfred State College football schedule has been finalized.  The Pioneers schedule features ten regular season games with four at home and six on the road.

The blue & gold open up their season on Labor Day when they travel to SUNY Brockport to take on the JV Eagles at 3 p.m.  The next Monday night (9/12), Alfred State opens up the home portion of their season at 6 p.m. versus Buffalo State JV.

Arroyo Named New Alfred State Athletic Director

Alfred State College Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Steve Tyrell has announced that Dr. Daryl Arroyo has been named the new Director of Athletics, Physical Education, Recreation and Intramurals.  Arroyo, who succeeds Kathy Feldman, begins his new duties at Alfred State on June 29.

Tara Murphy (Rochester/Wilson) and Colter Johnson (Warren, PA) were named the 2011 Alfred State College freshman athletes of the year.  Murphy ran to All-American honors in track & field while Johnson punted his way to All-American on the football gridiron.

Football Team to Host Bone Marrow Drive

For the second year in a row Mick Caba and the Alfred State College football team will host a bone marrow drive in support of the Be the Match Registry.  This year's event will take place on Wednesday April 6th between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Student Gathering Place in Central Dining Hall.

Participants will need to fill out a medical history form and have a quick swab taken of their mouth to be registered in the national marrow donor registry.
