Alfred State to Induct Five into Athletic Hall of Fame

The Alfred State College athletic hall of fame will induct five new members on September 25th during Homecoming weekend.  Basketball player Tom Hirsch, football player Chris Gray, baseball player Eric Baker, and cross country athletes Andy Coots and Gary Redding will become the newest members of the hall of fame.  The athletic department will also be honoring the 1984 cross country team.

Glomb Named Special Teams POTW

Alfred State College punter Jeff Glomb (Buffalo/St. Francis) has been named the Northeast Football Conference special teams player of the week.  Glomb is the second straight Pioneer to be honored by the NFC.

Glomb punted six times in the Pioneers 10-6 loss to Erie CC for 224 yards.  Four of his punts landed inside the 20 yard line and his long on the day registered 54 yards.  For the season, Glomb has punted 12 times for an avergae of 34.5 yards per punt.

Pioneers fall in defensive battle with Erie

In a defensive battle, Erie CC was able to down Alfred State College 10-6 in the Northeast Football Conference opener for both teams.  ECC improves to 1-1 (1-0 NFC) while ASC falls to 1-1 (0-1 NFC).

Erie got on the board on their first possession on a Mike Lawandus 37 yard field goal.  They made it 10-0 just minutes later capitalizing on the first of six Pioneer turnovers when Keenan Wilburn dove in for a score.

Pioneers Pass by Bulldogs

The Alfred State College football team opened up the 2009 season with a strong showing in a 40-14 victory at Stevens Tech (Lancaster, PA).  The Pioneers passed for 434 yards and held the Bulldog offense to 232 yards.

The Pioneers got on the board first after Dmeetri Wilson (Monroe Township) picked off a pass in the end zone on Stevens Tech’s first possession.  Reggie Corley (Elmira Free) connected with Rod Streater (Burlington, NJ) on the very next play for an 80-yard score.

Pioneers Earn Academic Honors

Twenty Alfred State College student athletes have been honored with academic awards.  Eleven Pioneers were named NJCAA Academic All-American, 13 were named Academic All-Region, and 20 were named Academic All Conference.

Women's basketball player Jacqueline Dresser (South Seneca) earned a 4.00 GPA to earn distinguished NJCAA Academic All-American.  She was also an All-Region and All-WNYAC academic honoree.

Six Pioneer football players were named to the Northeast Football Conference All-Conference team for the 2008 season.  Wide Receiver Josh Griffen (Englewood, NJ), running back DeAndre Johnson (Detroit, MI), defensive lineman Michael Gee (Englewood, NJ), defensive back Damion King (Detroit, MI), defensive back Ike Iloegbu (Brentwood) and punter Preston Washburn (Dundee) were each named Second Team All-NFC.

Pioneers Rally Falls Short

The Alfred State College football team fell behind 27-0 before putting together an impressive comeback that fell just short.  The Pioneers conclude the season with a 4-5 mark following a 34-27 defeat to Nassau CC.  With the win the Lions finish as NFC runner-ups with a 6-4 overall mark and a 4-1 NFC.

Frank Sinagra connected with Andrew Kell (28 yards) and Jamaul Boswell (13 yards) and Jordan Wilson plunged in from one yard out in the 1st half to give the Lions a 20-0 halftime lead.
