Both the men's and women's cross country teams at Alfred State are ranked #9 in the NJCAA Division III poll. The Pioneers open up the regular season on Saturday when they host the annual ASC Invitational.
The Pioneer men's team received 40 points in the poll. SUNY Delhi holds down the top spot with 200 points. Other Region III schools in the top ten include Mohawk Valley (#2), Broome CC (#7), and Herkimer CCC (#10). BCC will be one of the five teams competing at Alfred this weekend.
The 2008-09 Alfred State College athletic season kicks off this week as preseason camps open in preparation for the fall seasons. Football, volleyball, men's & women's soccer, and baseball will all report to campus and begin practice by Sunday while the cross country team will begin practicing on Tuesday.

Three Alfred State College athletes have been awarded the SUNY Chancellor's Scholar Athlete Award for excellence academically and athletically. Gallaway Longenecker (Manheim, PA), Zak Williamson (Rocky Point), and Keenan Hall (Monticello) were honored by SUNY and Chancellor Dr. John B. Clark.

The Alfred State College athletic department will induct three new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame on January 26. Kathryn Stedman (volleyball & softball), Joseba Sarriegui (cross country & track & field), and Mike Brown (baseball) will be inducted at a brunch ceremony in the Allegany Room of Central Dining Hall and then honored in between games of the basketball doubleheader with Jamestown CC the same afternoon.

Alfred State College sophomore Zak Williamson (Rocky Point) continued his solid fall running season with an 18th place finish at the NJCAA Half Marathon Championships. Williamson along with two teammates finished 12th out of 15 teams that competed.

Williamson ran the 13.1 mile race in 1:15.29 (5:46 per mile). He was the 11th American to finish the race.
Corey Smith (Wallkill) finished in 41st place (1:20.32 or 6:09/mile) while Jeremiah Bailey (Lyons) finished 61st (1:25.56 or 6:34/mile).

Zak Williamson (Rocky Point) earned 2nd team All-American honors with a 6th place finish. He crossed the finish line in 29:09.96 to improve form his 11th place finish in 2006.
