State Budget Update

In my effort to keep all constituencies informed as the New York State budget process evolves, the following summarizes the impact that Governor Paterson's budget proposal may have on Alfred State. You'll recall from my earlier communication that there were three types of possible budget cuts that would substantially affect the college. They were: the non-funding of negotiated salary increases, the state's redirection of 90% of the revenue from tuition increases, and a SUNY base budget cut.

ASC Mardi Gras Celebration on Tuesday, Feb. 24

Students enrolled in the culinary arts programs at Alfred State College will prepare a Mardi Gras celebration, featuring a New Orleans-style menu, on Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 5-7 p.m., in the student cafeteria of the Culinary Arts Building on the Wellsville campus.

Masked wait staff will serve patrons at tables decked out in bright colors designed to evoke a Mardi Gras atmosphere; jazz selections will provide additional ambience.  Guests will receive complimentary Mardi Gras beads in the traditional colors of green, gold, and purple.

SUNY Financial Aid Day

The Alfred State College Office of Student Financial Services (Financial Aid/Student Accounts) will participate in SUNY Financial Aid Day, Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, beginning at 9 a.m., in the Engineering Technology Building, room 215, on the Alfred campus. 

The Alfred State College Office of Student Financial Services (Financial Aid/Student Accounts) will participate in SUNY Financial Aid Day, Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, beginning at 9 a.m., in the Engineering Technology Building, room 215, on the Alfred campus.  There will be a brief overview of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and of the financial aid process.  Following this session, financial aid staff will accompany students and their guests to computer labs in the same building to assist them in completing and submitting the 2009-10 FAFSA electronically.

The Alfred State College Nursing Department continued its "Pay It Forward" philosophy through the awarding of its third annual round of  "Pay It Forward" scholarships, established during the fall 2005 semester and presented to this year's recipients, senior nursing students Carla Chamberlain, Andover; Laura Lindsey, Olean; and Michael Otugh, Brooklyn (originally from Nigeria), at semester's end.  Each student received $150 and a copy of the original signatures of those who initiated the scholarship, class of 2005.

Food Donated to Turning Point Food Pantry

Food donationThe Civic Engagement and Activism Headquarters at Alfred State College conducted a food drive prior to Christmas during which the members collected four large boxes of food from the students of Alfred State College.

ASC Group Attends NEACURH Regional Conference at Western New England College

Recently, Alfred State College National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) adviser Allison Keddie and a group of five ASC students attended the NEACURH (National Affiliation of College and University Residence Halls) Regional Conference at Western New England College. 

Recently, Alfred State College National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) adviser Allison Keddie and a group of five ASC students attended the NEACURH (National Affiliation of College and University Residence Halls) Regional Conference at Western New England College.  While at the conference, the Alfred State NRHH chapter was awarded a NEACURH Scholarship of $250.  This scholarship, which is given to only a few schools per year, was quite an honor for ASC as it has been a member of NRHH for just under a year.
