Meet Evan Sheffer

Evan is from Albion, NY and enjoys working with his hands.  He came to the Wellsville campus because " I'm not about sitting in a classroom all day."  Evan's grandfather was a carpenter and started Evan out with building at an early age.

Evan has a huge interest in guitars and is a good guitar player.  One of his ideas for after graduation from Alfred is to combine his interests by attending a school for luthiers.  Anyone who knows of a good school or apprentice opportunities for luthiers, please let me or Evan know.

Well I guess you can really tell that winter is coming by everyone starting to get sick. As for me i have been down for the count for the past few days. It is a good thing that health services are available on campus They are offered both on the Alfred campus and the Wellsville campus and they provide health education as well as treatment for student illness and accidents. A doctor, nurse practitioner, and registered nurses are available at posted hours on a non-appointment basis.

Meet Doug Baker

Doug is from York, New York and joined the Carpentry program because he likes working with his hands and "building things".  His parents have just purchased a cabinet making business and so he plans on working there after graduation.

I asked Doug why he wanted to come South with us:  "Norm, its NEW ORLEANS!"  He also thought he would learn more from the increased time spent working at carpentry.  Now he's here, Doug likes the weather, the beach, and says he is always busy.

Halloween week

Last night's hay ride was the first of many awesome events going on at Alfred State this week for Halloween. It was so much fun! The first ride left from the parking lot behind the admissions building at 6:30. We rode up to the college farm in a hay wagon. The farm isn't too far from campus, but since tractors aren't built for speed it was dark by the time we got there. When we got to the farm we rode up a long winding road to the haunted trail in the woods. The trail was was more funny than scary.

Kris is from Lakewood, a small town near Jamestown.  When Kris was small, he worked with his grandfather who was a house builder.  Now, framing houses is Kris's favorite thing to do.

Kris has enjoyed hanging out in New Orleans and walking Bourbon street as well as the swamp tour.  He has grown to love Bay St. Louis and is considering joining Americorp so he can come back and work with Habitat after graduation.  Kris has often worked with Habitat when he had free time and during weekend builds and was touched to attend a home dedication ceremony for one of the houses we built.

Fondue night!

Last night was an RA program... Fondue party!!! Who would have thought the building owned a fondue set? My roommate and I helped out by cutting up fresh pineapple and fruit for the chocolate fondue. It was a lot of fun, and perfect for taking the edge off after a long day of school work.
